I'm always on the search for new coffee shops as I love independent coffee shops. So, while I was in the Wanchai area, I noticed a new one called "I'm Nuts". A curious name that is for sure. As I was with boyfriend, I decided we should come here for lunch so I could give the coffee a try.The cafe is decorated in a dark wood with a number of cute chalk like drawings on the walls. As we were here during lunch hour, we were presented with lunch menu. The cafe is decorated in a dark wood with a number of cute chalk like drawings on the walls.
As we were here during lunch hour, we were presented with lunch menu. Lunch includes an $18 discount on drinks. Menu is in English and Chinese. There is no 10% service charge.
Giant Soft Shell Crab on the Green Beach ($128). Boyfriend wanted something crunchy so he ordered this. They really do put a whole soft shell crab on top. Though I felt it was a bit salty, boyfriend felt it was well seasoned. The crab was crunchy and not oily at all. The "green beach" is supposedly be pesto linguine and to represent the crab laying on a beach. Though I guess beaches aren't green so I'll just extrapolate and say it had a lot of seaweed. Aside from the strange name of the dish, the pasta was delicious. Al dente and pesto was rich and fresh. There was also a generous sprinkling of panko crumbs.
Clam Meat Linguine in Homemade Pumpkin Sauce ($88). I ordered this from their lunch menu. They used clam meat that has been removed from the shell and was very savory. But the star of this dish was not the clams but the pumpkin sauce. It was really excellent. It's been a long time since I found a place (at least in recent memory) where the use of pumpkin sauce was not just some ground up pumpkin. It ]tasted like pumpkin pie and it was great. A sweet sauce that wasn't clumpy and grainy. Smooth and creamy.
Latte ($38, lunch special price : $20). As I had come here to try out the coffee, I had to order a latte to try it out. The menu stated it used a La Marzocco Strada AV ABR. Apparently, the first of it's kind here, according to the menu. I know one other coffee shop that has a similar series but I guess this one bought the newer version. La Marzocco isa brand several coffee shops here choose to use. But this series is fascinating in that this machine takes away all the guess work in how much coffee to put in your cup as it will provide the barista with auto volumetric controls so it is standardized and repeatable. It even has a USB slot for upgrading information. I was lucky enough to try it out last year and was clearly impressed by a machine that was already a class of its own. It was just upgraded itself to be a step forward into the future. So, when I read this coffee shop was using this machine, I thought good choice. OK....coffee geek in me is geeking out over a machine. I'll get back to my cup of coffee. It was nice with a slight acidity but not too much. Amount of milk to espresso ratio was good. Temperature was good. It was a decent cup.
CocoNuts Latte ($48, lunch special price: $30). Boyfriend ordered this as they used coconut milk instead of regular milk. The shot of espresso is served separately. The espresso here is a bit more acidic than my latte but smelled wonderful.
After adding the espresso shot to the coconut milk, the taste of coconut was still not covered up. Yet it didn't over power the coffee. It helped enhance it somehow and oddly, it reminded me of kopi lethok (Indonesian style coffee).
Earl Gray Panna Cotta ($30). As we were sitting there, I noticed a cake display. So, we had cake afterwards as I LOVE CAKE. Boyfriend had this. An earl gray panna cotta. It had a strong fragrant taste of the tea. The panna cotta was smooth but could have been a touch more creamy. I liked the cute chocolate drawing of Pooh bear.
Lemon Citrus Cake ($38). I had to get this cake as I saw lemon. I love any dessert with lemon. The cake was delicious. The cake was moist. It had a strong lemony taste. It was sweet but also still retained the sour lemon taste. It was layered with a great lemon curd and frosted with meringue. It reminded me of a lemon pie but in cake form. They also drew Totoro on the plate as well which was super cute.
The staff was pretty enthusiastic over what they served, eager to describe what they served. A small independent coffee shop with decent food and good cup of coffee. Quiet as well so a good place to hide from the world. I''ll be back
