This is the second time I visited D.H. Crab in the Taikoo Place area in Quarry Bay. (I always visit a place twice before I review it). The first time I came was on a weekday during lunch and there was a wait for a table. So I got take out as I just don’t wait in lines. This time I went right at 1130 on a Sunday when the place opened up. And I have to say, the food was as good as first time if not better. I like the décor as it is very different than the normal squeezed in Fast Causal place. They have stools have backs and you can sit there without having your back and butt ache in 15 minutes. The interior is done with real wood and not that fake whatever you usually see on walls, which gives it a warm natural feeling. The colors from the pictures of the boats and crabbing make it a very colourful and comfortable setting to be in. There is even a picture of the owner up in the corner of the picture wall when he was a cook on one of the fishing boats in Dutch Harbor.
The first time I visited, I found the soup (Curry Crab Bisque) a little salty to my liking, which means I don’t like salt at all. This time it was awesome and I asked the owner about the soup. He said it’s a recipe that that he has had for a long time, but working in Asia, (he has worked in Singapore, Korea and HK) he had to cut back on the crab base as it was seen as a little salty. Well to me, good job adjusting, oh, did I mention there was a lot of crab in each spoonful?
I’m not a big eater as I have to keep that Island body in shape, so I had what they call a MINI Crab roll which is about half the size of the regular roll. But half or not, it was overflowing with crab meat that really tasted like crab, I mean it had the taste of the ocean in it and it was more than enough when ordered with the soup. As an island girl, I love that fresh seawater taste in Seafood which is hard to find in HK, and both the crab and lobster had it.
But, seeing I want to eat healthy, yea sure, I ordered the lobster salad too. As salad goes, this was nothing really unusual except it was really fresh. It tasted like they had just cut the lettuce, cucumbers, green peppers etc. and everything was like crisp crunching in each bite, and with the Lobster it was awesome and abundant. The dressing was just enough in both taste and quantity. Not too much so it didn’t overpower the lobster, which seems to happen more often than not.
The whole bill cost me $215.00 and I couldn’t finish it all, so I took the salad home. The full size crab and lobster rolls cost $100.00 (the MINI crab was $60.00). When compared to other crab and lobster roll places I’ve tried, this is about 30 to 100.00 cheaper than what is offered in other places in HK. I didn’t try their local HK craft beer that they offer, but my boyfriend did on his visit and he said it was “solid”, what ever that means.
