Shanghai Lao Lao is a modern Shanghainese restaurant, that puts a novel twist to many of its traditional dishes. Today I visited the restaurant with my parents to enjoy their 春節限定 「六福臨門」Six Blessing as an early celebration for Chinese New Year. Every dish serves as a blessing for the upcoming year.Deep Fried Mandarin Fish 松子桂魚 (HK$168) - 年年有餘This fine dish is a mandarin fish, poured over with sweet and sour sauce and pine nuts. This fine dish is a mandarin fish, poured over with sweet and sour sauce and pine nuts. In Chinese, “Fish (魚) " sounds like “surplus (餘)”, so eating fish at the end of the year symbolises wealth year after year.
The fish is deboned with the fillet attached to the head and tail. The deep fried fish was crispy on the outside, moist on the inside.

This huge meat ball looks like a Lion's Head. It symbolises "Good Luck". The meat ball had a nice savoury flavour in the right moderation. In the centre of the meat ball, there is a salty egg yolk in it, just like a golden coin.

The symbolism of this dish is "golden little coins bag”, due to the appearance of the XLB. The XLB had a lovely stuffing of crab meat and pea sprouts, and they were bursting with soup, as well as being steaming hot. They were served with shredded ginger and Chinese Black vinegar!

This Pork Belly pretty much melted in your mouth at the first bite, and it was very tasty. The layers of fat and meat created a contrasting, yet harmonising texture. I loved the wobbly fatty goodness. The sweet and glazed dark soy sauce was rich, yet not too greasy, therefore making the pork belly even more enticing. The dish also came with Quail Eggs and Bean Curd Knots on the side.

What a soothing and comforting cup of hot tea, with a hint of spice and sugar, a truly heartwarming beverage after dinner.
Each dish is made to perfection and tastes like home!
