Specializing in decadent cakes, chocolates and patisseries, The Mandarin Cake Shop has been around for a long time for over 25 years. I received $200 in vouchers for the famous cake shop at Mandarin Oriental so I stopped by one day to pick up some patisseries. As each dessert costs $45, I was able to pick 4 and it was hard to choose from so many choices! It wasn't until I got home and unveiled my patisseries that I realized the box was magnetic so it was very easy to take out the patisseries without ripping the box apart and smashing them by accident. Awesome design! I'm keeping it to transport my own cakes and desserts.

Green Tea Mousse (2.5/5) - I was naturally attracted to the green tea mousse cake so I had to get it. Despite its gorgeous colors, the cake was pretty disappointing in terms of its matcha flavors. It was not strong enough while the mousse was too dense and firm. There was a bit of azuki (red bean paste) inside but the green tea flavor was so off that it didn't really do anything for the patisserie.

American Cheesecake (3.5/5) - the cheesecake was very rich and creamy but would have been much better with a contrasting flavor like raspberry or blueberry for example. Without it, the patisserie was just one dimensional.

Chestnut Vanilla Mont Blanc (4/5) - I've had better looking mont blancs than this - the piece of chocolate in front was barely staying on. The flavors were decent with mildly sweet and tart flavors while the chestnut puree was yummy.

Opera (5/5) - finally a dessert that was impressive and that is the opera which was aptly ornamented with a music note on top! The layers of chocolate mousse, espresso, sponge cake and crunchy base all came together like a perfect concerto.

Verdict - for the price, I certainly expected more from The Mandarin Cake Shop but I wasn't wholly impressed for there are plenty of cake shops in Hong Kong delivering even more creative and delicate patisseries around.
