While I often visited Island ShangriLa because it was so close to my workplace, it was my first time to visit Kowloon ShangriLa. We booked earlier in advance and managed to get hold of supposedly the table with the best view as it was the table located in the middle of the big glass windows of the restaurant, overlooking Hong Kong Island. It was such a bright day with very blue sky and lots of sunshine! 

Angelini served semi-buffet for lunch on weekdays with selection of appetisers and salads from the buffet and daily soup, with a choice of main course and dessert at a price $328 +10%. You can pick "better" mains for an additional $100+10%. Small pastries with tea and coffee were included in this price. However, the servers seemed to have missed the small pastries and it seemed that they didn't serve them to other guests either by the time we left.

As soon as we had placed our orders, I started to grab some food from the appetiser and salad buffet. I was quite surprised that there was beef carpaccio on the buffet table. There were 2/3 types of parma ham, including one of pork cheek. There was also one kind of salami. There were 4 types of greens with some cherry tomatoes. There was also a cheese platter with 3 types of cheese and some pecans. There was a bowl of olives which I didn't try.

On the other appetiser and salad buffet table, there were cold seafood including shrimps, smoked salmon and clams. There were also some Italian-style vegetables including eggplants, mushrooms, pumpkin, beetroot, zucchini, fennel, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes with 水牛 cheese, marinated onions which were all pretty free of oil. There were also some bread and bread sticks on the table. There was a kind of pre-made salad with crab meat stick (seemed to be fake crab sticks).

There were so much to eat that unfortunately we didn't have room to try their bread. The bread in the bread basket was warm when served.

I basically tried everything on their appetiser and salad buffet table. The beef carpaccio was very thinly sliced and had a great tender texture. It was not rough at all. It was seasoned with some olive oil and it went great with the rocket served on the same plate. The only complaint was that the beef flavour was not rich enough. The parma ham was quite good, not rough at all, and went great with the Hami melon. The Hami melon didn't look very juicy but they were fresh and sweet enough to balance the salty parma ham. I tried the other 1/2 parma ham including the pork cheek which weren't particularly special. The salami was ok. To the contrary, the cheeses were pretty so-so. They were all so hard and not the kind I liked. The greens were fresh.

I also tried almost everything on the other appetiser and salad buffet table. The smoked salmon was fatty enough. The shrimps were not bad. The clams were pretty fresh, although they were so tiny. The 水牛 cheese was so tasteless and too watery, maybe just not my cup of tea. Apart from that, all other Italian-style veggies seemed ok. In short, there was sufficient variety of veggies and they were healthy enough to give you a balanced diet. At such a price and at such a hotel, the quality and variety of food items could more than justify the price.

The daily soup was mushroom. It was served really hot, which was really appreciated. I finished it with my choice of a super long sesame thin cracker from the appetiser and salad buffet table. 

Then here you go our choices of mains. We heard that pasta here were particularly outstanding so both of us went for the pasta despite our expected full stomach after the appetiser and salad buffet.

This pasta was really exceptionally good. The texture of the pasta was perfectly al dente. I hadn't had such great pasta in such a long long time, even at those supposedly good Italian restaurants. The Amatriciana sauce was just right, of the perfect flavour and appropriate amount. The only complaint was that the pork cheek was too minced and the portion seemed to be too small.

To the contrary, the risotto was very disappointing. The risotto was not al dente enough. I found them too soft, although they were already more chewy than normal Chinese rice. The sauce of the risotto was also not tasty enough, a bit too plain. The amount of seafood was more generous but the texture of the shrimps was quite a failure as they didn't seem to be fresh enough.

The name of this "Traditional Angelini tiramisu" stopped us from skipping. First of all, the portion was so big! There were more than sufficient even for the two of us to share. There were loads of cocoa powder on top of the tiramisu but I personally found it too try, maybe just not the type of dessert I liked.

The portion of this chocolate cake was so big again! The chocolate cake was pretty thick, although there could have been more layers (maybe I am asking too much given that it is not a top-tiered restaurant in town). It went well with the plentiful berry sauce to balance the sweetness of chocolate as well as the dryness of the chocolate cake.

Although we were so full by that time, we still wanted to try their chocolate drinks. We ordered iced chocolate with skimmed milk. So it was not as sweet, yet of the right degree of sweetness to end the meal. The only complaint was there were too many ices and we had to wait so long for the drinks.

The bread in the bread basket was nicely packed in a lovely paper bag for take-away. It was really appreciated.

Overall, I would say that the food offered a very good value for money given the price and location. However, service could have been much better as it was a restaurant in an international branding hotel after all. The restaurant was not full and the servers seemed so busy to refill our water (even after our reminders), not to mention taking photos for us. We asked one server to take a picture for us but he wore no smile on his face and just quickly walked away after taking 3 photos for us without counting. And don't forget the missing small pastries as stated on the menu which I mentioned earlier. It was quite disappointing indeed. Having said that, the manager of the restaurant was much more polite and made us feel more welcomed than creating trouble. Overall, I would still give a smiley for the dining experience.
