Visit 1

I had the wild steak don ($99 promo, Aussie beef) which was great in terms of seasoning, texture and done-ness (a nice medium rare), and I really liked it.  But one problem: it suffered from a distinct lack of heat.  Everything but the soup was lukewarm.  I reckon it was because 1) they spent a lot of effort arranging the plating to make it look nice and 2) the salad which builds the "mountain" on top of the steak, and the sauce itself, is cold.  The rice wasn't exactly steaming either.  Shame, it could have been so good.

I was told about the half price kagoshima beef promotion and decided I would return.

Visit 2

Ordered Mount Fuji and the Mount Everest Dons because they had sold out of the promotion Kagoshima beef bowl already =(

This time I made sure to ask them to heat things up a bit more and put the salad on the side.  This definitely helped raise the temperature a little, but sadly the beef was rather overcooked.  There is more beef in the Mount Fuji and Mount Everest dons, but the Wild Steak don is more thick cut and juicy.

If I hadn't already asked my friend to meet me for lunch for the third visit, I would have given up at this point.

Third Visit

Third time lucky I guess!  Showed up really early and managed to snag their Kagoshima Sirloin don.  Waitress remembered me.  I reminded her to give me hot rice and no salad on top.  She said there is no salad on the Kagoshima dons, but she would tell the kitchen to give me hot rice, and I heard her do it, so fairly good service there. But when my order arrived...well....the rice was not hot.  Nor was the beef.  At this point I was starting to think coming back was a mistake.

The steak was pretty rare in the first place anyway (the picture is before further heating), so I asked them to heat it up, hoping it wouldn't destroy the buttery texture.  The gamble paid off - a scrumptious steak indeed, as the heat rendered the fat into an even more fragrant flavour, but the meat was still comfortably within the medium rare range.  The rest of the don was not bad too, with a bed of shredded egg topping the rice, and some tasty veggies rounding things out.

Conclusion

All in all, at the current promotional prices and with some very specific instructions to the kitchen, this place is a winner.  But they really need to take on board the temperature comments!  I notice I'm not the first to say this from reading the other reviews.  Come on, make that steak sizzle, or your restaurant will fizzle!
