The man behind Hakkasan opened Betty's in IFC quietly few weeks ago. As with all his previous restaurants, Betty's design and lighting is flawless and you can feel the vibe before you even enter the restaurant. Foodwise, the waitress describe it as french but i would call it european comfort food. There are about 6 appetizers and 10 mains on the menu and some dishes designed for sharing. We opted to share the Stuffed Calamari with chorizo venere black rice ($188) as the starter. The calamari has stuffed vegetable inside and combined with the chewy rice makes it an interesting and flavourful dish. For the main we orderd Duck Confit for Two ( $398), the skin is crispy but the meat is a bit dry and since it doesnt come with a sauce it seems bland for asian's palate.
Betty's is still in its fine tuning stage, the food will get better by the day. The service is perfect and even our food was not slow, the waitress kept apologizing to us. Betty's is worth going just to experience dining in a world class restaurant. It will surely raise the bar for local restaruants to follow. Unlike many local restaurant operators who are desperate to make a quick buck, Betty's is offering discount during its trial period. This is another first for the local dining scene, Alan really knows how to please his customers!
