I cannot claim expert on this, but I have had enough of the bad "mixed bean dessert", aka 喳咋 here. I found extreme comfort in the good ones in North Point and at 強記 (Wan Chai), and then I heard much about the ones here in Shau Kei Wan. I was on the next bus here when I realized, in many occasions, I was either too early inthe day or simply sold out for the night. The timing wasn't right, or perhaps it wasn't meant to be, gathered from the recent reviews. Then this night they finally had it, so I decided to ditch my dessert plans to try them. Little did I know that my troubles were not behind me.

One order of the hot 喳咋 -- ladled just on demand, with aroma of fresh coconut shaved and cooked until soft for the bean mixture later on. The entire dessert is made in procedures. Cooking the beans in different stages, followed by chunks of taro root, and then add in the desiccated coconut and then just before serving, evaporated milk. The warm bowlful of goodness arrived with a swirl of evaporated milk on top, as if Jackson Pollock has done wonders to the artisitic elements of it. The aroma of coconut was there, but something was missing. I didn't know what it was at first, but later as I spoon through the dessert, savoring spoonful by spoonful, I realize, that it's the natural smoothness intended for this dessert that's missing. It's too chunky, as if they've tried too hard to include every bean ever allowed to be in the dessert in that small bowl. The liquid proportion was off, and it also was a little sweet to round up the entire dessert.

On the upside, the taro root chunks were soft and gooey, yielded from long hours of slow simmering, and the coconut flavour was pronounced without being cloyingly coconut-ty. I would expect better from here, if people have been rating this "mixed bean dessert" to be on the same level of the ones at 強記 and the one in North Point...Next time, I'll know, if I want a quick fix, I may come here, but if I really want something close to "decadent' level, I would prefer to go an extra mile for something better.

Too many beans, simply not soupy enough!
