Get your heads out of the sand Starbucks people, there is good coffee to be found if you could just put down your caramel french vanilla frappachinos with extra cream served to you by a 16 year old for a second and look around the corner to find locals who are passionate about coffee like the barista at SMOKO.

Like any Aussie in HK, I have been craving a good local Flat White or Latte, and to put it simply, SMOKO hits the spot for me. Coffee is not just a drink, its the experience of trudging to the cafe from the office, to be welcomed by the warm aromas of coffee beans, the friendly chat with the Barista, the sounds as the espresso shot drips out, the warm cup in my hands and then the rich, velvety goodness as you take your first sip. SMOKO delivers perfectly, and is a thankful addition to the developing coffee scene in the Fortress Hill/Tin Hau/North Point area.

The beans used here are rich in flavour and aroma, but sometimes edging on the bitter side. The Barista will ask you how you like it though, and I have seen her make adjustments accordingly. Next time I might just ask for a weaker espresso shot.

As for opening times, its a bit touch and go. Supposedly open at 8am weekdays, I've visited at 8:45 sometimes and it was not open.

Overall, delighted with this place, and come here as my trusty local (when open!).
