Having heard so much good things about this restaurant from the other reviewers, and since we happened to be in the area one Weds evening, we thought we might just give this place a try. No doubt the place is very popular - we arrived at 8pm on a weekday and there was still a small queue waiting outside the restaurant. Having heard so much good things about this restaurant from the other reviewers, and since we happened to be in the area one Weds evening, we thought we might just give this place a try. No doubt the place is very popular - we arrived at 8pm on a weekday and there was still a small queue waiting outside the restaurant. So, unless you book a table in advance like what we did, be prepared for some waiting, as this place is really small (only around 10 tables at most). Service was prompt and efficient. The 2 of us just ordered the soup of the day ($10 per bowl), the riblet cooked in strawberry sauce, stir-fried tofu with mushroom and vegetables, and a half portion of the garlic chicken. The so-called soup of the day (with pork and vegetables) was hardly 老火湯 at all, since it lacked the usual depth of flavour associated with prolonged boiling, and we suspected that it also contained quite substantial amount of MSG, as we got thirsty soon after having it
The tofu dish tasted ok but was nothing to boast about really; the only thing I liked about it was that the sauce was not made too "thick" as was usually the case with such dishes. Likewise, the riblets were not bad - cut into bite sizes with bones already removed, with tender meat inside and cripsy coating outside, and surrounded by a sweet sauce, it was actually quite enjoyable; but to be honest, apart from the few pieces of strawberry, which gave the dish its name, we could hardly detect any hint of strawberry flavour in the dish, and the whole thing just tasted like the usual "sweet and sour" pork to us.
The chicken dish was a bit disappointing, as it was probably overcooked and the meat was not tender enough; also, it was a bit on the salty side, and in our opinion, it was not worth its price ($120). But the major put off of the place was obviously the crampy environment - with tables so close to each other, seating was rather uncomfortable, to say the least; as a final testimony of the "crampiness" of the place, we noted that the waitress had to physically remove the table at the end of the dinner before there was enough space for us to leave
Also, the background noise level could get unbearable and maybe even irritating at times... ...
The bill was not cheap and honestly, at such prices, I expect better food and ambience. Overall, the place is not bad for the occasional dinner if you happen to be in the area, but we just think it maybe a bit overrated.
