Grassroots Pantry is not "just another veggie restaurant". It's a special restaurant because it serves great food with a lot of thought put into the menu, and sources many of the vegetables from local farms. Like many of the previous reviewers, I enjoyed the service. Peggy (owner of the restaurant) is simply delightful; she is always smiling and making sure that we are enjoying the food.I went to Grassroots last week and found to my delight that the menu has changed since the last time I was the
I went to Grassroots last week and found to my delight that the menu has changed since the last time I was there. They have this starter dish (to share - but I can happily finish it on my own!) which has pandan "chicken", which is actually hedgehog mushrooms. Now, I don't really like mock-meat vegetarian cuisine, and while this dish isn't really a mock-meat dish, it does remind me of roasted pandan chicken. But the bonus is this - the hedgehog mushroom is simply out-of-this-world delicious! I swear, it's better than any pandan chicken you have ever tasted. I wish they had a main dish just for that.
For the mains I had the cold soba, which is perfect for summer in Hong Kong. My partner had the curry which was also near-perfect. I love the attention to detail, and the care that goes into every dish.
Of course, the dessert was just as good as the mains and starters, if not better. I had the banana chocolate salty caramel... let's just say that I wish I didn't have to share the dessert!
Remember to make a reservation; the place is small so it fills up quickly. If it is a last-minute decision to go there, try to get a booking earlier in the evening, e.g. 6:30pm. It is easier to get a reservation at that time. Otherwise, try a walk-in but be prepared to wait.
