Boyfriend and I were in the North Point area and wondering what we should have for dinner. We came across this place called Ying Lok Restaurant. There was a number of people waiting outside for  table. We decided to give it a try as it seemed a lot of people who lived in the area ate here.

The a la carte menu is in English and Chinese though they have daily special sets in Chinese only. There is no 10% service charge. The sets include a daily soup, rice or congee, main and dessert. If you order a la carte, you have an option of upgrading to a set for a few dollars. Boyfriend and I decided to order something from the daily selection. They claim they do not use any MSG.

For the dessert portion of the set, you have  a lot of choices.

The daily soup was nice. Very homestyle. It was basically daikon and carrots.

I had congee while boyfriend asked for rice. The congee was ok with a bit of corn found in it. Otherwise a basic white congee.

One of the mains we chose was a braised chicken with tofu ($68). It was fairly decent and did remind me of a homestyle dish. It wasn't overly seasoned but it still had a good amount of flavor. The chicken meat was very moist and tender.

We also ordered the sweet and sour fish ($69).  The sauce wasn't too sour but good enough. The fish meat was soft and it wasn't heavily coated in flour. It didn't appear to be deep fried? Again, it felt like something you would make at home.

We chose two desserts: red date lotus seed white fungus sweet soup (on the left) and mango pudding (on the right). The desserts were ok. Not spectacular but quite decent. The mango pudding was a bit too sweet.

Prices aren't expensive  and I can understand why people who lived in the area came here to eat. It's exactly like the type of dishes you'd make at home and did feel healthier. Would be back if in the area and not sure what else to eat.
