The main reason why I was there. Look at that plateful of golden crab paste. It still makes me drooling by looking at the photos🤤 It was rich and creamy that the strong flavour filled your palate immensely. We specially ordered the male crab since its glutinous paste gave sweeter and deeper flavour. Carbs is the perfect food to give the paste a body and this chewy green bean noodle was just amazing!
I am a big fan of bean sprout for its unique grassy and somewhat nutty flavour👍🏼 Here they they used the most precious leaves (only 2 per stem) of the sprout called 豆胚 in Cantonese. Since it’s very small and fragile, it’s very easy to overcooked. But this plate was very fresh and tender! But the hair crab paste was not particularly good compared with the previous one and a bit overpriced. I would prefer a clean version since this vegetable is already superb on its own.
Guess no one can resist a XLB with hair crab right 😆 I love they even added loads of crab meat into the bao. And look at the dripping oil, it’s a showstopper. Btw, the price of this one was very very friendly and you should definitely get this one🤑
Also the regular. It was very high quality as well. The skin was not the super thin one which I like since it could not carry big meat ball and all the jus if otherwise😉
A must get item to me every time. The texture is always flawless with a little crunchy on the exterior while perfectly runny yolk inside. The smokiness is impeccable too😝
First time eating this dish. It’s like the lamb 🐑 version of Chinese Pork Terrine (餚肉). Actually didn’t taste like lamb but beef brisket 🤣 Nice try tho.
This was actually a cold plate appetiser to my surprise. It was like salt baked chicken with hints of smoke. Not bad but was expecting a tenderer version.
It was like Dongpo Pork 東坡肉 but with fermented bean curd. It was in great texture. Tender meat, little chewy skin and melty fat. But the flavour was a bit too sweet for my liking and I guess it would go well with some bread.
It was totally not sweet that we had to need extra sugar for it 😂 but the aroma was authentic and deep.
Lao Shanghai would be my lunch spot if I can’t decide what to eat. You are guaranteed with nice food and decent service here. Do give them a visit no matter for hairy crab or for regular Shanghainese food fix👍🏼
