Seven friends looking for a place to get together for eating and drinking on a Saturday night. We wanted something different from the usual, and Myung Ga provided a really fine experience. We discovered this version of the restaurant by accident, really ..... we were looking for Harubang, the Korean restaurant which used to occupy these premises (and which I had visited in the past). But Harubang is gone and Myung Ga has arisen in its place -- this is apparently one of a small chain of Myung Ga restaurants in several different parts of the city. The management is different from Harubang, but many of the staff were familiar, having been hired directly by the new management.
We got a warm welcome from the staff (friendly to all but obviously more comfortable for linguistic reasons chatting with the Chinese-speaking members of our group). But they gamely helped our English-only speakers understand what the various foods were.
We ordered a BBQ assortment and got comfortable with our drinks. The set included a variety of delicious cold dishes, and the staff was assiduous in bringing new bowls as our Kimchee Chowhounds polished several off. When the BBQ stuff came, it was copious, with a variety of different tastes (one beef marinated in chili sauce was completely new to me, and as I love spicy food it was a real hit.) The waitresses graciously helped cook everything on the grills, freeing us to gab (and drink) and they made sure each one of us was served.
We brought our own heavy red wines to go with the BBQ beef, facilitated by the restaurant's reasonable corkage practice. ($100 per bottle). This was, to be honest, one of the reasons we chose the place, because we do like our own wines and the excessive corkage charges in other restaurants are a real joy-killer. So we filled our glasses and drank to our hearts' content. (The one beer drinker in the group pronounced the house draft (Sapporo) to be excellent!)
So at the end of the meal, we had enjoyed a wonderful dining experience, a wonderful social experience and a wonderful alcoholic buzz. The staff's warm farewell when we left made everybody feel good. We will be back, for sure.
