After not sure where to have dinner in Yuen Long that had air conditioning, we came across this restaurant that seemed to be very popular. It appeared to be an old school cast iron steak house. So, why not? It seemed the local Yuen Long people liked it. While boyfriend got a number, someone walked by and said "food is terrible, no idea why so many wait for a table". Inside was very crowded and decor was old. The table clothes were old and ragged. Later I discovered, they also didn't change them so they were probably oily from the splatters of oil. We ordered two steak sets. All sets came with a soup, coffee or tea and toast. Toast? I wondered if maybe the English was poorly translated, but then a slice of toast was promptly placed in front of me. I joked at least they cut the crusts off...super high end.
Boyfriend chose borsch. It was horrible. Just tasted like sour tomato water. Boyfriend claimed it was so sour, it bordered on bitter.
I ordered cream soup which was canned mushrooms in a white corn starch water. I rarely have high expectations with cream soup at Chinese restaurants but this was just bland white corn starch water with spongy canned mushrooms mixed in.
Boyfriend ordered beef fillet with black pepper sauce. The staff said to lift up the table cloth to protect ourselves as the sauce was poured on top of the cast iron plate. Usually places tell you to use paper napkin. This is the first time a table cloth was used. And it wasn't changed when tables were cleared. Made me wonder how many splatters of oil was on the cloth? Anyways, the black pepper sauce was sweet and not peppery at all. Meat tasted like baking soda.
My sirloin had onion sauce. Sauce was ok. But my steak just tasted like baking soda. It was so bad, I couldn't eat it. I only ate a couple of pieces and stopped.
After we were finished our drinks, our table was cleared and we were told how to pay....cash at the cashier. Place was busy and they needed our table.
It was horrible. We should have listened to the guy who said it was bad. Only positive was the air conditioning is on full blast and the staff worried there wasn't enough.
