Without going into too much background, my wife and I were coming back from a trip to China yesterday evening-- and the flight was predictably delayed. My wife was in a strong chimichanga mood, and so before going home we rolled our suitcases up the escalators to grab chimichangas at Cali Mex around 10pm.

When I got to the end of my order, I said "and can you make it a chimichanga?" Then the hammer came down... nope. Apparently being "open" until 11 just means that they sell the day's leftovers until 11. They stop cooking anything long before that, even though cooked things are a large part of the menu. I was already really cranky at that point, and this just did not help my mood at all. I hate the burritos, I thought, they have such horrible tortillas and bland sauce. Without the deep frying, what's the point?

Well, I finally got home and I was pleasantly surprised. I do believe they've changed the tortillas. They're still not amazing, but I didn't find them entirely off-putting as I had before. What's more, the "hot" level of hot sauce is actually hot. I had got some El Yucateco out of my fridge, but after a few bites I realized I didn't need it.

I do think this place is evolving, and perhaps listening to complaints here and elsewhere and trying to improve.

Detailed food review: The tortillas are better, as I said. This time I got the pulled chicken, and it wasn't as bland as the steak I got last time. It was reasonably tender and they put a lot on the burrito. The rice is very bland (why is it yellow and not red?) and the beans are overcooked-- I do wish they'd have a fajita veggies substitute like Chipotle, or some good pinto beans (NOT refried), or just not crunchy black beans. The hot sauce is comparable to Chipotle's, so significant but not serious.

I've officially changed my mind and now have this as my go-to spot for burritos in HK.
题外话/补充资料: I knocked the place down on service because the people working the register don't seem to know how to use it.

Choices are headaches because all of them are good.

First you choose your filling then you decide whether you want a taco, quesadilla, burrito bowl/burritos or the crispy shell bowl!!

I had my eye on the Spinach and Venice beach, but in the end I got the Venice beach because there were so many ingredients in it that i haven't tried such as tofu sour cream and vegan mock chicken which the other Mexican places in Hong Kong don't offer.

I loved the bowls here because they are flatter than the ones at Little Burro which makes it easier to eat.
Each mouthful was tasty with rice, lettuce, tasty sauce, guacamole and salsa.
To be honest I was still hungry after the bowl!!

Luckily, I shared a chicken quesadilla with someone and that was amazing, I loved the melted cheese in between with the chicken, sour cream and guacamole.
The quesadilla was soft and crispy.

After I finished, I sampled the fillings and I must admit the chicken in ranchero sauce was so tangy with gorgeous herbs to flavour it.
They used white meat and it was tender and soft.

Overall, the ingredients were fresh and put together very well.   However, one VERY disappointing area was the tortillas.   They are HORRIBLE.   The thickness and doughy-ness of the tortillas ruin anything that was put inside.   I believe this is a terribly important issue to fix.   Bad tortillas ->  Bad cal-mex.

For the fried-tortilla shell salad, the frying oil's temperature must be too low, as all the oil seeped into the shell, making it incredibly oily and soggy.

Given that rents in HK are sky high, it is expected that the prices cannot possibly begin to match global expectations for the price of tex-mex fare.   However, they skimp a lot on the quantity of the quality ingredients.   Therefore, value is extremely low.   Might be better off going to Lil Burro.

I hope they can improve on these points.   This could be a go-to place if that's the case!

Since I reckoned ordering hard taco for takeaway might be a bit messy, I opted for the Regular Beef Burrito ($97) instead. Considering the price tag which could get you a decent sit-down lunch complete with drinks, my expectations were high. My order was with black beans and medium spiciness (actually they only ask for medium or spicy) with added guacamole. By default you also get the usual rice, lettuce and tomato fillings. The combination? A delectable, comforting burrito with robust but balanced flavour underlined with a hint of spiciness - it won't surprise, but it also won't disappoint. The main downside for me was the portion is fast food sized, merely enough for a half meal, but hey, who's complaining. I'm happy with a taco fix before we see more like-themed eateries.

::|Good for|::
Satisfying those taco cravings while Taco Bell is still miles away...

While unwrapping the burrito I notice I was able to get a handle on it pretty quickly.  Burritos are generally popping at choke points in folds but Cali-Mex burritos were different, easy to handle.

I start devouring it only to notice a lack of meat that I had ordered.  The majority of the burrito consists of rice and beans.  The rice lacked the usual colours, no cilantro taste, salsa was negligable, no sour cream.  Guac was a $30 option ($12 for 2 avos at parknshop).

The one in Central (Wellington Street) is the best one among all the outlets so far. Staff are better prepared and skilled here. They take less time in making your order and getting the line going. The price is slightly pricey for "just" a burrito, but then again, it's Central [and this is the kind of food in the "expat-food" category].

I ordered the burrito with chipotle pulled pork, black beans and salsa verde. The pork itself was tender and well spiced. Salsa could have been colder and with more lime to add further freshness to the tastebuds. I wanted guacamole but glad I didn't because they had scooped in a salad-size-spoonful of (flavoured) sour cream, making every bite a bit too "saucy". With the beans, I was still impressed that the whole burrito was not too runny and the whole thing stayed intact till the last bite [It wasn't the case with the other outlets; my hands were soaked after only 1/3 way through the burritos].

The red cabbage in burrito was a good touch. Extra veggies in the meal are always good and cabbage had more crunch and sweetness than its friend, the bland lettuce.

There seem to be the stirrings of a burrito trend in Hong Kong. First Little Burro opened up, and then Yonge Piggies started to sell burritos as well as hot dogs and "ice cream sundaes." Now, this place called Cali-Mex has opened or will open four locations in Hong Kong. I had to give it a go, so here are my thoughts.First, this is relatively Hong Kong, but also relatively maddening: there's a giant bar full of fixins, but you don't get to stand there and tell them what you want on your burrito.

First, this is relatively Hong Kong, but also relatively maddening: there's a giant bar full of fixins, but you don't get to stand there and tell them what you want on your burrito. You have to do it up front at the cashier. Which would be alright, I say grudgingly, IF they had accurate information on the menu about what comes in the food.

For example, the menu says the burritos come with pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream, beans, and rice. There's no mention of lettuce, which is reasonable, because lettuce is a stupid ingredient for a burrito, and even more so for a chimichanga. But it's also unreasonable, because they put lettuce on your burrito anyway, without telling you and without giving you the option to decline.

If I were you, I would not trust the menu, and I would ask them to tell me everything they were putting in my order, and I'd return it if it wasn't right. I almost returned my burrito. It might seem silly, but lettuce is objectively not supposed to go on a burrito. It's not a ******* wrap!

OK, sorry, I do get excercised about such things. What I got was an angus steak chimichanga ($98 + $8 for deep frying) with no sour cream and additional guacamole ($18). Several aspects of the ingredients disappointed me: the steak was alright, but not well-seasoned, and a little chewy with two inedible bits; there was lettuce, which shouldn't be on a burrito, and should definitely not be deep fried; the guacamole, while being pricier than Chipotle guac (at USD$1.80), was sparse and furthermore, should have been on top instead of inside for a chimichanga. The salsa had the mildest tinge of hint (I ordered the highest spice level).

What I did particularly like was how well the tortillas fry up. The burrito doesn't look as golden as you'd expect, but the exterior was nice and puffy and crisp. They don't give much thought as to how you're supposed to eat it; it should be slathered in salsa, with guac on top, and come with a knife and fork. Still, I liked it, and I'd probably get it again but with chicken, a *side* of guac ($28 or $48, depending on the size) and no lettuce.

This picture is indicative of how the structural integrity of the burrito is compromised by the frying, and how this dish deserves the knife and fork treatment.

My wife got barbacoa ($88) plus guac ($18). She thought the beef didn't have the best texture for shredded beef, but her main complaint was that the tortilla was too thick, and not very good particularly. I think since they use the same tortillas for burritos, quesadillas, and chimichangas, they're going to be not ideal for any of those purposes. Her ultimate analysis: "it's definitely a passable burrito, but not a really good one. Maybe a little bit better than Little Burro."

So there you go. I recommend the chimichanga if you're not watching your waist (which is not what one does at a burrito joint anyway). Don't have high expectations.
题外话/补充资料: They do four things: burritos/ chimichangas, quesadillas, tacos (hard or soft), and salads. The fillings come in a wide variety: minced beef, barbacoa, steak, shredded chicken, grilled chicken, pulled pork, veggie option (bean, spinach, mixed veggie, or vegan), as well as baja fish and shrimp.
