I usually don't write multiple reviews of the same restaurant, but my last trip here changed my opinion of this place in a number of ways, so I thought "blog" some thoughts in the form of a review.Without going into too much background, my wife and I were coming back from a trip to China yesterday evening-- and the flight was predictably delayed. My wife was in a strong chimichanga mood, and so before going home we rolled our suitcases up the escalators to grab chimichangas at Cali Mex around 10
Without going into too much background, my wife and I were coming back from a trip to China yesterday evening-- and the flight was predictably delayed. My wife was in a strong chimichanga mood, and so before going home we rolled our suitcases up the escalators to grab chimichangas at Cali Mex around 10pm.
When I got to the end of my order, I said "and can you make it a chimichanga?" Then the hammer came down... nope. Apparently being "open" until 11 just means that they sell the day's leftovers until 11. They stop cooking anything long before that, even though cooked things are a large part of the menu. I was already really cranky at that point, and this just did not help my mood at all. I hate the burritos, I thought, they have such horrible tortillas and bland sauce. Without the deep frying, what's the point?
Well, I finally got home and I was pleasantly surprised. I do believe they've changed the tortillas. They're still not amazing, but I didn't find them entirely off-putting as I had before. What's more, the "hot" level of hot sauce is actually hot. I had got some El Yucateco out of my fridge, but after a few bites I realized I didn't need it.
I do think this place is evolving, and perhaps listening to complaints here and elsewhere and trying to improve.
Detailed food review: The tortillas are better, as I said. This time I got the pulled chicken, and it wasn't as bland as the steak I got last time. It was reasonably tender and they put a lot on the burrito. The rice is very bland (why is it yellow and not red?) and the beans are overcooked-- I do wish they'd have a fajita veggies substitute like Chipotle, or some good pinto beans (NOT refried), or just not crunchy black beans. The hot sauce is comparable to Chipotle's, so significant but not serious.
I've officially changed my mind and now have this as my go-to spot for burritos in HK.
题外话/补充资料:
I knocked the place down on service because the people working the register don't seem to know how to use it.
