TL;DR: Very tasty food but dreadfully slow service and condescending manager

Having wanted to try Olive for some time, I finally went in for what I was expecting to be a relaxing Friday lunch location. Oh, how I was mistaken.
The restaurant is tightly packed with tables, and coupled with its low ceilings, makes for a very loud and claustrophobic environment. This was not a deal breaker though, a noisy and cramped restaurant is par for course in Hong Kong, and the decoration is pleasant enough.
Before speaking on the service, I will say that the food at Olive is delicious and presented ver well. Our table ordered off the lunch menu and we had the Greek Salad and Haloumi with Roasted Figs (amazing) for starters, and the Roasted Chicken and Chicken Souvlaki for the main course. Everything was superb and reasonable, $300 between two.
Unfortunately, my whole dining experience (and countless others at the restaurant I'm sure) was marred by the extremely slow service. Olive is detrimentally understaffed and has clearly overstretched itself.
First of all, as mentioned before,  it has packed as many tables as it could fit into its restaurant, thereby maximising client intake. Look, I'm not against Olive trying to make as much money as it can, and if your service and kitchen can keep up with the amount of orders with those added tables, then go ahead and pack us in. But with only two waiters (technically there were three including the manager, but I'll get to that later), and a spare few chefs operating the kitchen, everything took forever to reach the tables. We ordered at 1245pm but received our main course at 1:40pm, which, for a restaurant operating a lunch service on weekdays, is quite unacceptable; we didn't leave until 2pm. The two waiters, both of whom were working to the best of their abilities, were frantically running around the restaurant trying to do their jobs; it was extremely stressful watching them, and many diners, sensing the two waiter's stress levels, held back from asking from where their food/utensils/menu/water were. I mean, I only really raised my hand when I was dying of thirst and the tap water I ordered 20 minutes ago still hadn't been served. The unrest produced by the slow service was palpable.
To add to the chaos, I saw the restaurant actively taking and preparing orders from Food Panda. Again, Olive has every right to sell its food through whatever channels it wants, but it shouldn't come at the cost of your eat-in diners.
Now the manager (or who I assume was the manager). Hoo boy.  A competent manager would've been able to assuage the tension felt from both the diners and the waiters, and also prioritise eat-in orders over Food Panda orders. This manager was not that. This manager was condescending and seemed to barely help his poor waiters in serving the dishes. He would walk around and tell those diners politely holding their hands up to wait two minutes, and then would never come back; it was like he was actively avoiding interaction with diners. He didn't once help pour water, take orders/questions,  talk to diners, he excelled at putting his hand up and patronisingly telling customers to wait a moment; it was very off-putting.

Knowing that Olive is ready to launch an exciting menu of Greg’s latest contemporary dishes in late May, we have a good reason to stay at Elgin street. We start our dinner with a couple of starter, complemented with a glass of fruity and light white wine.

We all love the Olive’s almond falafel with lentil tabbouleh salad and tahini yogurt ($108). It’s a great journey of texture , going through the crusty ( a bit hard though- because of the fully occupied almond crust on the outside); and then a tender and soft inside. The meat ball has a good kick from the chili that surprise us when the hot sensation pops up at our tastebud after few second. Spiciness is always a temptation which you say- oh it’s too hot but then u want for one more bite; and one more.

If you want to go exotic on this Friday night, suggested is the chicken liver kalamarki- crumbed , skewered and served wit feta mayonnaise($118). Liver was so creamy and melt immediately in the mouth with lingering exotic aftertaste that forms a contrast with the crunchy crumbs outside.

And our table’s favourite goes to Cypriot haloumy and fontina cheese fondue with sumac, thyme, lemon peel and toasted milk bread. ($118) All those cheesy jam clinging on each other, making us craving for more! Squeezing refreshing and light lemon juice on cheese has added complexity to the dish, setting a contrast against the creamy comforting cheese.

Once we’ve had enough for starter, we move on to mains. We opted for Quail in pistachio, sumac, sesame crumbs on potato salad with peas & Persian spices. ($238)Quail was char grilled to a perfection, lots of umami juices oozing out, with a perfect pink.
And if you are a fish person, recommended is the Pomfret in thrice cooked chips, cumin salt, griddled brocolini with almonds and harissa butter ($208) wth thin and crispy batter. Potato as a condiment was a highlight too! Given that the potatoes was firstly steamed, then stir fried and back to be deep fried, potato was rich and smooth like mashed one but with a stronger texture.

We end our night with a light and refreshing option for desert, lemon posset with orange blossom and honey camel wafers ($68), and a comforting one, Pavlova with chocolate mousse, and strawberry salad. They all looked great and had great quality ingredients but were lacking a bit of creativity, and the wowing combinations that I was looking for in Belon.

We had walked by this small place on several occasions but had not chosen to go in.  Today, the vegetarian moussaka caught my eye so we decided to give it a try.  It was relatively early, only 12:30, so not many people were there.  We liked everything about the place.  The music, world-music I call it, was soft and eclectic; inviting you to stay and enjoy the small, but elegant and cozy surroundings.

Opting for the set-lunch ($118 per two courses + drink at the time of this writing), I selected the baba ganoush, hummus, and pita mezza while my husband chose the kalamari.  Both selections proved to be extraordinarily tasty! Next came the entrees - vegetarian moussaka for me and hanger steak with potatoes for my husband.  What exquisite, mouth-watering delight!  Why had we waited so long to try this excellent restaurant???  The bechamel on the moussaka was light and creamy with a crispy top.  This was enhanced by mint, pomegranate, and slivers of tomato.  My husband's steak, he reported, was "very memorable!"  The cut and the preparation were perfect for him (medium) and the taste was (again, according to him) "delicious!"  The lunch portions were large enough that we both left almost over-full.  There was not enough to warrant take home but everything was so good that we couldn't justify it going to waste!

The baklava for dessert was actually 4 small dessert bites. They were okay... although I probably wouldn't order dessert again.

By the time we had our lunch, dessert, and coffee, the entire bill for 2 people (with 10% service charge) was $313.  Some may consider this a little steep but, I assure you, based upon our experience, it is well worth it!

We are only here for 2 more full days but we liked it so much that we have already made reservations for dinner on Monday for my birthday! Although the vegetarian selection is small (2 entrees), the moussaka was so delicious that I will be happy to return to enjoy it again!

伴菜薯仔,這燒薯仔作為伴菜十分合適,薯仔夠淋,但味道清淡,只帶微微的焦香味道,配任何主菜都可以特顯主菜的味道,不會喧賓奪主,蓋過主菜的原來精髓。

This was, I think, the finest meal I've had in Hong Kong. A special occasion, admittedly, with an unaccustomed budget - but I was surprised at just how completely worth the expenditure the experience proved to be.

We started with mezze (hummus, babaghanoush), and fried haloumi. These Eastern Mediterranean standards turned out to be an unexpectedly complex and detailed treat for the senses - silky babaghanoush clinging to pieces of warm, redolent pitta bread that tasted as though it had been freshly baked only minutes before; perhaps it even had. The pickles, of bland and blameless appearance, contained some lively surprises in their flavours that I won't spoil here - a nod towards the playfulness of Modernist cuisine by the likes of Ferran Adrià. The cheesy twisty things ('Fatima's Fingers', I think) were a touch heavy as accompaniment to the rich dips, and I'm always delighted to gobble down, rabbit-like, more crudités - but that, I recognise, is a personal kink.

More surprises in the Moussaka (my main), which came dressed in a tomato-orientated sauce with a slight heat of chillis, and a spicy, herbal aroma that I absolutely could not identify (despite having done well with the pickles in the previous course). It was a delicious mystery; rich without being overwhelming, and just the right amount. My friend had the salmon, which also went down very well. We agreed that yes, we could perhaps just find room for dessert...

But before that, let me tell you about drinks: A glass of Lebanese lager to start us off (can't recall the name off-hand, but brief research suggests it may have been '961 Lager') - a delicate fruitiness of hops, subtler than that produced by the coriander and citrus additives to wheat beers, but hugely more interesting than 'average yellow beer' - something that if you stuck it in a glass in front of someone in a country pub in England, they'd call it an 'ale'. Then, we had a bottle of Lebanese wine (quite a mix of grapes), which I'm sorry not to be able to name, but they've only one, and it was sumptious. Light, yes, but with intense but perfectly balanced acidity, sweetness, and body, the effect of which was an amazement rather like upon tasting lemon drizzle cake for the first time as a child. With our afters, we tried both dessert wines: a Greek Muscat, and a Moscatel of Lebanon. The latter was unusual to the point of slipping past my descriptive faculties, and though not my favourite, became more enjoyable as I became accustomed to its rare fragrance. The Muscat was simpler, classic - a glass of honey salted with a single tear.

Finally, dessert. The baklava I'd been looking forward to were not, it transpired, quite fulfilling of my hopes - rather dry, and with an undetaste of beef tallow. This may simply be baklava 'Lebanon-style', in which case my comparing it to the nutty, sticky, aromatic morsel I encountered in the Cyclades may be somewhat unfair. I ate them anyway, because one should. Now... my friend went with our host's recommendation, the justly fabled Galaktoboureka. I was expecting it somehow to resemble an egg tart, and in terms of that component, my suppositions were not exceeded by the hot, fluffy, cake-like object that appeared - underneath. The interesting bit was the large sphere melting atop it. The menu says 'candied lemon ice cream', and such it may well be; the specification, however, in no way touches just what an extraordinary substance it was - something like clotted cream infused with Kitron, but this would still not explain how, or why, this was the best ice cream I have known in this world. It was the sort of thing that's so good it makes you want to weep.

Winding down now, I should mention that our host was incredibly helpful, patient, and knowledgeable. He was the very opposite of wait staff who just 'carry the plates', intimately familiar with the preparation of our dishes, and of a fount of background information to the wines we chose. The interior was a little sparsely populated on the evening we went, which made for a peaceful atmosphere, augmented by gentle lighting. Beyond anyone's control, the interior was hostage to Hong Kong's infamously unliveable architecture: freeze or suffocate were the choices afforded by the A/C, so bring a wrap or something else to cover shoulders and legs if you're a delicate thing like me, and you'll have a lovely time.

Completely average. My partner and I went here with high expectations, but we were let down. It's lunch time, so we step inside to a reasonably empty restaurant and stand like two lost children for a couple of minutes until the waiters have finished their conversation. When we are finally seated, the table is somewhat disappointing. Of the two water cups, one had an insect dying inside, the other a hair. The cutlery had not been polished so had water stains all over. The wine glasses had not been dried correctly so again were covered in water stains.

We are given the lunch set menu, which looks delicious, and reasonably priced. The waiter gets our order by ear, repeats it back but is completely off, after correcting him he takes off. A few minutes later he returns to double check our order.... Would a pen and paper not save the trouble?

The drinks came out; an orange juice and a diet coke - diet coke tasted more like water.

The food then came out, and true to the menu, it was delicious, the absolute saving grace. We had both ordered a souvlaki. And it would have to be one of the best souvlakis I've ever had. 10/10.

My suggestion to my fellow diners would be to get take-away. The food I will eat again, the dining experience I will not repeat.

But it appears time heals, as the food really was very good, and not the tiny portions they palmed off on "takeawayers" years ago. The seating is a little cramped to be honest, but hey this is Soho, where space costs a fortune (unfortunately this is why some decent places close, greedy landlords not bad food).

The South African wine was very drinkable too, and that is a feat in itself as most South African wine is at best rancid.

The lamb shanks looked good and my fish was great, the haloumi and other starters were all very good, and yes, i would return again.

Huge improvements.

We've been having issues with Sunday dinners for some time. Not about whether or not to eat together - that's a non-issue - but about who gets to decide on where to go. I won't go into detail about how issues managed to wriggle their way into this deceptively simple plan...owing to none less than the litigious atmosphere in the household, ha-ha-ha. Happily, all was playful banter, done in good faith, in jest.

This particular Sunday, D, R and I combed the entire SoHo area from Aberdeen street to Gough Street to Staunton, Elgin, Shelley...it was a little later than 8 by the time we decided on Olive. I secretly cheered. Have always wanted to have dinner here because the 3 lunch experiences I've had were pleasant.

Environment:
Tables are quite near each other, conversations easily overheard; dim lights, long dining room, one round table for 5(?) at the entrance next to the full-length glass window providing an unobstructed view of Elgin.

Service:
No complaints. Pretty spot-on. Waitress was all smiles (so important!) and gave recommendations which were worth trying. Attentive and unobtrusive. Would've been even better if she could tell us that the extra naan would be charged. Not that it's a problem (HKD15) but it would've been nice to be told.

Food:
Olives Mezze – Silky Hummus, Smoky Baba Ganoush, Cheesy Pastries; seasonal Pickles & Marinated Olives, Warm Pita Bread $118

Hummus was smooth, spread easily on the pita. I liked the seasoning - not too sour, but with enough lemon juice to let you know it's there. Baba ganoush was true to its name - smoky, soft (kind of like stiff whipped cream), moderately spiced but the subtle sweetness of eggplant came through nicely. The pasty substance was non-oily and felt like a healthier option than hummus, albeit slightly less satisfying. Cheesy pastries - basically a soft, mild cheese wrapped in deep fried rice sheets; unmemorable. Cucumber sticks were lightly salted. Pita bread was served hot - had a bit of oil on the surface which I didn't expect. I expect pita slices to be almost oil-free, sprinkled with a bit of flour to keep them from sticking to each other. Overall, a moreish, family-friendly dish, fun to share.

Warm Moroccan Lentils with Fresh Burrata & Hand Pounded Mediterranean Herbs $108 (see pic above)I enjoyed the bed of lentils. Can't describe their taste now because it's been a while since I had this meal. I enjoyed lentils more than the burrata, which is an Italian cheese made from mozzarella with cream, hence its texture is akin to mozzarella, only slightly more buttery in the center. The flavour is quite mild. I enjoy mozzarella as a melted cheese on top of pizzas. I am not so fond of having it in Caprese salads. Not saying that I wouldn't recommend this dish, but there are other tastier options below.

Hazelnut Falafel with Winter Tabbouleh & Whipped Tahini Yoghurt $88

This for me was a winner. I love any kind of falafel, and the fact that hazelnut was incorporated into this one made it even more intriguing. The bed of rich flavoured, liberally seasoned tabbouleh was the star though. I don't like parsley but enjoyed this particular mixture very much. Again I cannot identify the ingredients (due to lapse of time) but...it's yum. The falafel had a dense but crisp exterior, tightly-packed filling (did not fall apart when we cut through it), moderate spice. The yoghurt acted as some sort of glue to bring everything together in the mouth. This is my favorite starter - although you can't have too much of the falafel as it is quite filling, I could steadily rake spoon after spoon of tabbouleh into my mouth.

Baby Spinach Salad with Medjool Dates & Walnuts $48

This side salad was surprisingly delicious. From the name I expected something very simple, thrown together without much thought, but it wasn't. It was very well thought-out, perfectly seasoned and dressed. Baby spinach was fresh and crisp, walnuts gave the salad a nice crunch and nutty flavour, pomegranate seeds added acidity and moisture (bursts of juice), dates added the final touch of sweetness. Perfect salad to be consumed on its own, perhaps with a bit of bread/some other carb. So glad we ordered this.

My choice of mains because of the chicken. I love chicken. Especially a tender, juicy, moist, perfectly Flavored chicken like the one we had here. No complaints at all - it was everything a perfect chicken should be. The portions were also very generous. As you can see, there is no shortage of spice in this exciting and flavourful mains. The giant couscous to me, was especially fascinating. The texture is unlike that of couscous. It's more gelatinous - kind of like the bubbles in boba tea. Slightly less rubbery, of course. I really liked them. The jus was also delicious. You can see a handful of cinnamon sticks in it, adding a spicy sweetness. Not surprised if star anise and cloves went into the pot as well. All in all, a perfect dish by my standards - tasty, hot, flavourful, and quite balanced in terms of nutritional value

Greek Spiced Lamb Rack With Twice Cooked Finger Potatoes, Wild Rocket & Olive Dressing $308

Not my choice but I managed to try a small bite of lamb which I don't usually eat. It wasn't as gamey as I feared. The finger potatoes were delicious though. First had them in Seattle a la Jonathan; never saw them again in HK. They are a wonderful small breed of potato perfect for light roasting, because they go crisp on the outside but remain starchy on the inside. They do not fluff up or crumble like jacket potatoes. They also have more flavour than new potatoes. Each one a pocketful of potatoey goodness hahaa! Yumyum! R and D both liked the lamb. The rocket was well-dressed and added a pleasant peppery flavour to the dish.

Desserts were omitted because I have not had any luck with middle-eastern desserts at all. They are usually doused in a sickly syrup which even I find too sweet and cloying. No. We hopped over next door for the dessert bar instead, and were very happy with the mango cheesecake.

Conclusion:
I will so be back. Still got other dishes on the menu to try!
Hoping to see new additions to the menu, which at the moment is not so comprehensive.

So super mondays on Asia expat are the real deal for some restaurants and this one is definitely a shining example. After deciding on the spur of the moment that we would go out for dinner, we ended up choosing Olive, a restaurant that battles many a cuisine on the hotly contested turf of Elgin street.

Ambiance

Nicely decorated, not too over the top, more functional than thematic but the small touches to the fittings were sufficient. Sufficiently lit, and the balloon fabrics on the ceiling help dampen the effects of it being a large room. Definitely suited to larger groups and the menu naturally leans itself towards this way as well, but a small group definitely would enjoy it too.

Food

We ordered Falafels, Lamb rack, Poisson in a Tangine, Baklava.

Granted I was craving some good middle eastern food, it was a nice surprise to have been served with such wholesome dishes. The ingredients were largely true to the cuisine (no cheeky substitution of ingredients here), servings generous and most importantly the food tasted delicious. I know most locals have a natural aversion to all things lamb but I would think it hard for even a local to dislike the awesome lamb rack.

It is hard to go wrong with Falafel and it was good to see such a common dish was actually improved on. The combination of greek yoghurt with the traditional lebanese flavours of tabouli proved a good combination in the end. The poisson was succelent and the flavours well balanced. However the best choice by far was the rack of lamb. It was cooked to perfection (a rarity in HK it seems). The flavours had you coming back for more.

Wine

A nice selection of wines by the glass.

Service

Service was friendly, quick and very efficient. We were at least served by 3 different people who at each moment in time seemingly knew what stage of the meal we were at. The staff are definitely very experienced and I thank them for making it a very pleasant evening.

Overall

Very nice surprise given the level of competition on Elgin Street. Would highly recommend the lamb. I was further impressed at how much they were embracing the Super Monday promotion and they did not skimp on any part of what was promised. I guess good things can come from promotions after all. Irrespective of the promotion though, this is a restaurant that does not try to achieve too much and has appropriately priced its menu. For lovers of lamb or not and those willing to try some food from around the Mediterranean then this is a must try.

I love the presentation of all the food. Attactive looks always drive people to eat more .I tried some of each, and most of them are delicious. Olive’s Mezze, Calamari and Loukoumades are nice. But I'm just not so much into the lamb pie, since I prefer lamb rack or lamb chop, instead of minced lamb.
