This was Saturday at 8:00pm. Surely if they are serving their regular menu it's then? I swear, I was inside the formal dining area, not out front, but the menu we were given had none of the options you will read about in the reviews below. The menu I was given had about 6 different starters (chips & guac, chips & salsa, chips & ceviche, pork rinds & guac, and two others), 6 different types of tacos (the same ones you get out front) and three quesadillas. No gorditas, no tostadas, no roasted romanesco cauliflower, nada. Am I missing something?

The chips I liked. They were freshly cooked and warm, thick and crunchy, salted without being salty. I also liked the guacamole. In HK it's often this wierd perfectly smooth, alien green stuff. Here it's chunky and clearly, you know, made of avocados. It came with some salsa verde too, but the salsa was overly sweet and not particularly good. Overall, I thought the offering was good. B+

There was only one ceviche on the menu and I didn't read the description very well, so I can't describe it in any detail. It had fish and corn and maybe some fruit (?) and like the salsa verde was on the sweet side. I didn't dislike it but I don't think I'd get it again. OK, C+

Three kinds of tacos: chicken carnitas on the left, then mahi-mahi, and finally beef. I'll say that I liked the beef the best. It had some of that sweet salsa verde on it, but not too much, and the beef itself was really well seasoned and well cooked-- charred on the outside but tender on the inside. The chicken carnitas taco was good-- I don't see why you'd go with chicken instead of pork here-- there was some sort of sweet onion pickle on top I could've done without. The fish was nice with some crispy... things... on top (sorry, I didn't really read the menu). Unfortunately they over-did it on the sauce for the fish taco. Together I thought the tacos were very good, B+

After eating the above we decided we were still hungry, so we ordered a chorizo quesadilla. It was sort of like the chimichanga of quesadillas. Was it deep fried? It was crispy and greasy, with Mexican chorizo (ground seasoned pork instead of the sausage slices one gets at Spanish places). I liked it, but it was heavy even for a quesadilla. B-

My margarita had kaffir lime and jalapeno chili in it. But it cost over $100 and had the world's biggest ice cube in it, so it was maybe like a third of a drink. 8/10 on taste and about 1/10 on value-for-money.

I didn't get any of my wife's cocktail, and I would have her review it but now she's gone to bed. So your guess is as good as mine. She didn't spit it out or anything.

I'll definitely say I was disappointed. I like tacos, but I thought I was in for something more. Maybe they do still serve gorditas, tostadas, and "seared pork belly with green peanut mole, crispy pork skin, onion jalapano rajas, chayote peanut slaw," as one review below indicates. If so, they don't serve them to me, and that makes me hypothetically angry. The tacos are comparable to Brickhouse and better than Taco Chaca. Some of the tacos (beef, pork belly) are great, but the entire set up is marred by this HK thing of stuffing everything with rare and exotic ingredients instead of just settling down and making good, solid food.

Good? B.

Happy hour only exists for the taqueria so we went back outside and ordered a drink (30% off), the pulled pork sopes, and the mushroom truffle tacos from the happy hour menu. The kid waiter that took our order insisted there was no happy hour until two of the other staff informed him, and he didn't bother to come up to apologise for the mistake or anything, just hung out on the sidewalk smoking. I guess that was to create the atmosphere of what a real taqueria is like on the streets of Mexico.

The tacos were a decent sized portion and very tasty, lots of mushroom and a dollop of sour cream, not too heavy either. The pulled pork was dry and the sopes was doughy and bland.

After that we we went back in to the dimly lit restaurant and was shown a round booth that offered plenty of privacy for conversation but without being cut off from the rest of the room. The service inside was much better, in that the waiters were up front with the deals they were offering (free white/red if paying with any Amex, woot-woot!), the Restaurant Week deal of $328 and another $258 deal for the Socialito one year anniversary (similar, but only 1 appetiers). The food was served in a timely fashion, the plates were cleared at the appropriate times throughout the meal, and the table was wiped down before the mains and desserts were served. Tap water on demand, no fuss about pushing bottled water, and happily refilled by the staff without asking. At least two waiters came up to ask our opinion on the food, we almost thought it was some secret filming for the food channels as they went into a lot of details about the texture and flavour of each dish and asking us for comments on the smallest detail. It was nice to interact with the staff in a positive way and they were not intrusive at all.
For starters we had the red snapper and hamachi cervice, the tomato salad and the tuna tostaditas. The presentation was different to the other ceviches I've had (the soupy ones in a glass), and I loved the sweetness of the hamachi with a bit of garlic sauce, whereas the red snapper came in a paste mixed with mango that was a bit too mousse-like, and the seasoning overpowered the fish. The tomato salad was refreshing and the tuna tostaditas was a good sized portion of creamy coconut and avocado puree and juicy cubes of tunas that went well with the crunchy chips.

For mains we had the short ribs and the monkfish. The short ribs were divine, so so SO tender it melted in my mouth, I hardly had to chew any of it, and the sweet sauce coating the rice was irresistable. It's almost like the Opor Rusuk I had in KL, perhaps the chef was tyring to combine some Asian flavours into a Peruvian dish? The monkfish was a little overseasoned and dry. The side of sesame kale had nicely wilted greens, and the potatoes were fried crispy on the outside.

Desserts of chili molten chocolate cake and banana fritters were both beautifully presented, with an interesting combination of flavours and textures. The chocolate cake was ever so slightly overcooked and the middle wasn't runny, but other than that the dish was excellent. Both the red and white were good house wine. I like the vanilla flavour of the horchata (would have liked a bit more cinnamon too), and the hibiscus tea was a lovely dark velvet colour and very refreshing.

When I first visited Socialito at the beginning of the year, I was immediately impressed by the restaurant's understated, stylish surroundings as well as the creative and satisfying Mexican cuisine. The recent introduction of a new summer menu has brought me back to this restaurant, and I was once again wowed by all the bold, delicious flavours of the dishes!
The kitchen used a range of light, summery ingredients to create the dishes on the new menu, which make them more palatable under Hong Kong's unbearable summer heat.

Expanding from the Mexican region, the preparation of the new dishes draw in techniques and ingredients from other Latin American countries. The portions for the summer dishes are slightly smaller than the winter ones, and there are more light and raw dishes, such as salads and ceviches - they are brilliant to go with a glass of wine or cocktail!

(1) Our feast began with Scallop Tiradito (with Passionfruit Broth, Corn Salsa, Crispy Serrano Ham, Mint), which was a light, delicate dish that was lifted by a fruity, sweet sauce. The smoothness of the scallops was nicely broken up by the crunchy serrano ham.

(2) The Cuban Mojo Ceviche (Hamachi with Garlic Chimichurri, Spiced Plantains, Frisee) was delightful, with the startlingly fresh taste of the hamachi accentuated by the clean-tasting garlic chimichurri.

(3) The Panamanian Tuna Tostaditas (with Coconut Sauce, Avocado Puree, Grilled Orange Fennel Salsa) were deliciously comforting, and the contrast between the velvety chopped tuna and the thin, crispy tostaditas was terrific.

(4) I loved the smoothness and creaminess of the avocados in this Creamy Avocado Salad (with Picked Tomatillo, Green Onions, Buttermilk Dressing, Toasted Almonds). The tartness of the buttermilk dressing and the herbal taste of the cilantro added vibrance to this salad. We also tried the Argentine Salad (with Caramel Infused Dressing, Bacon, Chipotle, Goat Cheese, Chimichurri Crisp), served with a piece of Chimichurri Crisp which was thin and fantastically crunchy. The goat cheese was enticingly rich, and the caramel-infused dressing, which was sweet and slightly hot, gave this salad a marvellous kick!

(6) The Roasted Monkfish (with Caribbean Coconut Sauce, Crispy Polenta, Spinach, Red Peanut Crunch) was gorgeously crispy on the surface, and the seasoning was spot-on. The crispy polenta confused us for a while as we wondered why it was in a brown colour, but the staff later explained that the colour came from the spices which they cooked the polenta with.

(7) The scallops in the Sea Scallop Fideos (with Spanish Pasta, Poblano Cream, Mussels, Corn, Cilantro) were tenderly cooked and had a melting texture, but the Spanish pasta, which was deep fried instead of boiled, was rather dry and grainy texture; I wished that normal, smooth pasta was used instead, which would have matched the buttery texture of the scallop.

(8) Due to the outbreak of Mad Cow Disease in the USA years ago, Hong Kong imposed a 10-year ban on US bone-in steaks, and the ban was only lifted earlier this year! Many steakhouses have jumped on the US bone-in beef bandwagon, and Socialito is no exception. The USDA Prime Bone-In Ribeye (18oz) with Kumquat Mojo was lip-smackingly good, and the taste of beef, layered between fat, was sublime. The Kumquat mojo was a light, citrus dressing which worked incredibly well in cutting through the fattiness of the beef.

(9) I have a weakness for most forms of carbohydrates, and the Bravas Potatoes (with Chili Tomato Aioli, Spring Onion & Cilantro), which were crispy on the surface and powdery in the middle, completely won me over. The sweet potatoes were cut into little chunks, and the entire portion was gone in minutes! The Baby Corn Esquites (Grilled Baby Corn with Aioli, Queso Anejo, Lime, Cilantro) had a lovely crunch, and the aioli matched with the corn perfectly. The Sea Beans with Cauliflower (with Slow Cooked Garlic Sauce) were also tasty, and a strong taste of garlic gave this dish some flair.

(10) Even though we already had enough food to feed a family for a week, our appetite knew no bounds and we decided to order the Dry Aged Strip Loin with Truffled Chimichurri. The strip loin was more fatty than the rib-eye we just had, but it was just as delicious. Even though the steak would have sufficed on its own, the Truffled Chimichurri tasted terrific and was a welcomed addition.

(11) When I thought that the meal could not get any better, it did when we finally got around to eating desserts. The Fig Crepas, fresh figs served with crispy, eggy crêpes, were simply sublime. Figs are very commonly eaten in Mexico and in Latin America, and this light, delicate fruit worked wonders with crêpes, a caramel sauce and some almond crumble. Some house-made Cajeta ice cream, which tasted a bit like salted caramel or dulce de leche ice cream, was served on the side, and it was so ridiculously tasty, sweet and sticky that we were almost fighting over it!

(12) After we finished our meal, we ordered some cocktails. This Walking Dead was a drink with absinthe in it. In order to mask the taste of absinthe, the drink was made very sweet, but the taste was still perceptible. It was definitely not the most delicious drink I have had, but it would surely be very effective in getting you or your friends intoxicated! I also had a drink called "Aphrodisiac", which was (despite its crude name) an elegant drink with a remarkable taste of aged tequila.

Socialito really appealed to me the first time I visited, and my second visit turned out to be just as good as my first, if not even better! The menu was innovative and playful, and the Latin America-inspired dishes were full of complex, exotic, fabulous flavours - the meal was a job well done.

Creamy Avocado Salad

Sea Scallop Fideos

Sea Scallop Fideos

USDA Prime Bone-In Ribeye, Bravas Potatoes

Baby Corn Esquites, Sea Beans with Cauliflower

Fig Crepas

The Zombie, Cucumber Margarita, Mexican Coffee

There are three faces to this Mexican eatery. Outside is an alfresco taquería, where you can grab a large piece of taco to go with your beer. Past a discreet steel door (which resembled a kitchen's door) is the elegant dining area of the main restaurant. Both lunch and dinner are available at the taquería, but the main restaurant only opens at night. If you wish, you can buy food from the taquería during lunch time and sit inside the restaurant. The main restaurant does not take reservations unless you have a party of 6 people or above. Luckily (for me, but perhaps not for the restaurant), the dining area was only half full when I went on a Friday night, which meant that I was spared from merciless waiting times. However, despite there being available tables, I was told that I could not be seated until everyone arrived, so I was sitting at the bar table alone for 25 minutes waiting for my friend. While this policy is perfectly understandable when there are other people waiting for the tables, it was rather unaccommodating for them to enforce this when the restaurant was half empty!

The decor is classy and eclectic - furnished in brass and mahogany, the restaurant looked a bit Moroccan to my untrained eyes. The menu is more extravagant than those found at its Mexican peer in town - the lobster and wagyu dishes immediately intrigued us. The service could be slightly unresponsive at times, but the staff were all polite and deferential. As the dining area turns into a nightclub at 11pm every night, fashionably dressed customers gradually fill the restaurant at around 10.30pm onwards, livening up the place.

(1) Our first dish was the Spiny Lobster & Avocado Crudo ($210). The lobster sashimi was seasoned with a coconut chili sauce, and the smoothness and suppleness of the lobster was heavenly. It was topped with some cucumber noodles, which were incredibly refreshing, and some pickled shallots. A spicy kick lifted the flavours of the dish.

(2) Arriving next was the Seared Pork Belly ($90), cooked in a Guajillo sauce. The pork belly was crispy on top and thoroughly cooked underneath. Even though the pork belly was relatively lean, it was not any less tasty than the other pork bellies I have had. We loved the fresh, vibrant mango salad on the side, which also helped cut through the fattiness of the pork. My friend particularly adored the pork scratchings, which were light and crispy and easily broke apart, and were completely different from the rock-hard ones he remembered from boarding school!

(3) We shard the Wagyu Tostaditas ($120), which were dressed in a "Garlicky Guacamole". The wagyu beef was beautifully tender, and the guacamole was lovely; my only complaint was that the tostadita was too thin and crispy and I personally preferred it to be thicker and softer.

(4) The manager recommended the Winter Caesar Salad ($100). The bitter greens had an usual bitter taste, but it was invigorating! The chili infused dressing was delicious, and what we enjoyed eating the most were the thin, crunchy tortilla strips. We appreciated the innovative twist on the classic caesar salad!

(5) We ordered a portion of Off The Cob Esquites ($70), which was grilled corn cooked with spicy mayo and cilantro. There was an attractive sweetness, and the addition of feta cheese was excellent. The corn was nicely grilled, and we liked how we could easily eat the corn with a spoon instead of having to bite it off the cob!

(6) The manager also recommended a Roasted Romanesco Cauliflower (V)($180), a vegetarian main course of romanesco cauliflower and grilled baby eggplants cooked in green mole. It was precise and accomplished, with the green mole sauce providing a distinctive and exotic flavour. The romanesco cauliflower and the baby egg plants were crisp and scrumptious, and had been meticulously grilled for just the right amount of time. The garlicky white rice was soft and fragrant, and the pickled raisins and crispy onions added some flair . This is definitely one to recommend to my vegetarian friends!

(7) For desserts, we ordered the Chili Mango Tostadas ($85). Chopped mango was piled on small pieces of tacos, drizzled in a hot caramel sauce, and served with some red chili cream. The mango was juicy and delicious, and a touch of cinnamon brought out its sweetness even more. The red chili cream had an appropriate hotness, and the tostadas were buttery and crumbly. I would recommend this dessert too!

The restaurant doesn't impose a 10% service charge, and a typical dinner would cost around $450 per head excluding tips. Socialito is slightly different from the usual rustic and down-to-earth Mexican restaurants - it is a sleek and sophiscated place where you can enjoy refined Mexican dishes.

Food was served after a quick 10 minute wait, first came the market fish tacos which I absolutely loved (I’m definitely going back for this!) By first sight, it looked like a boring fish with tartar sauce taco, garnished with some fried onions. But there was a fine twist to the tartar sauce, it had a hint of coconut taste to it (I must admit I’m not a fan of coconut but the faint taste of it mixed really well with the fish and all.)

Heres the chicken carnitas sopes and the wagyu beef pastele whilst we were finishing our last bites of the tacos. The chicken carnitas sopes were mini sized, not particularly special to me, all I can recall now is just chicken with guacamole on an oily bottom (the sopes).

Last came the wagyu beef pastele, nothing too fancy with the sauce but the beef was nicely braised, very tender and well seasoned. I personally didn’t like the banana masa, probably just didn’t like mushy textured foods in general.

Lunch totaled to a bit over $100 for each of us, but overall I would consider to revisit Socialito to try out their restaurante (apparently they have a restaurant behind their taqueria, and the entrance is actually the silver kitchen door.) But definitely will be back for their market fish tacos!!

Since it was just the 3 of us, we didn’t need to make reservations as we were told only large groups of 6 were required to reserve a table. At first we were puzzled how to enter the restaurant as there was a diner outside but then we peeped through the kitchen style door and saw the restaurant. The interior had a warm, wooden feel and dim lights which was a nice contrast form the busy streets outside. We decided to order family style to get a taste of different dishes: Carpaccio, Wagyu Tostaditas, Wild Mushroom tacos and a side of corn off the cob. While we waited for our food, we ordered some cocktails: 2 Zumbidos’ and 1 Modela as they sounded fruity and sweet from their descriptions.

As we drank our cocktails, we couldn’t help but notice how strong yet delicious they were. By the time our first dish arrived, we were quite relaxed and chatty probably because of the rum hehe! The Carpaccio was small in portion and all 3 of us finished it in 2 bites. The Wagyu Tostaditas were delicious and I loved the sauce combination. Though a bit too salty for my liking I couldn’t help gobbling everything down! Then the Corn and Wild Mushroom Tacos came. After 1 taco I felt quite stuffed. Didn’t think I’d feel so full since all portions for the past 2 dishes were small. We decided to slow down on eating and continue sipping on our cocktails. Eventually we finished the corn and couldn’t eat anymore, not even dessert! Our bill came up to almost $900 including drinks which wasn’t too bad though I think I would only return for special occasions

Last night the SO and I decided to have Mexican..we were on the way to Brickhouse when we impulsively decided to try Socialito instead, as friends had given us rave reviews of the place.

Socialito is actually 2 restaurants in 1 -- an casual counter-top taqueria on the street-front, and a more fancy formal dining area indoors -- with different menus.

We went for the casual tacos on the store front. I ordered the duck carnitas taco ($75) while the SO ordered the vegetarian corn tamales ($95). We also split a horchata (forgot the exact price, about $50) and a side of tortilla chips with guacamole and pico de gallo ($75). Now, these prices are on the pricey side for casual/Mexican fare, but since it was LKF/Soho area, it was not unexpected.

Verdict on the venue:
1. A really well-designed taqueria front that feels authentic, and the restaurant inside is well-done as well. What you would expect for the group behind Lily & Bloom.
2. The staff are friendly.

Verdict on the food and drink:

1. Duck taco ($75) -- two very small tacos in a paper container. The meat was generously portioned and the texture was good (not too dry, not too wet). However, the duck meat was way oversalted (even for someone who's used to salty food!) and lacked balance. It could have done with more vegetables or herbs (cilantro, tomato? something else?) to balance out the heavy saltiness of the meat. The size was about the same as the tacos at Mr Taco Truck (but the price there is $34 for two tacos).

2. Corn tamales ($95) -- again, two small tamales that came in what appeared to be banana leaf, and not corn husk. The banana leaf gave a very bitter flavor to the tamale. The tamale was a bit too wet with the sauce and had not flavor, despite all the crema, queso fresco and chili on top. The texture was a bit weird, like lumpy curdled tofu. The tamale should be light and fluffy, like good polenta. For the price for a vegetarian dish, it was not acceptable.

3. Horchata (about $50) -- OK, but it tasted like the restaurant used UHT milk or evaporated milk instead of fresh milk. For that price, they should be using fresh milk. Not much cinnamon flavor and the ice cubes are very big.

4. Chips with guacamole and pico de gallo ($75) -- OK. The tortilla chips were the best part of our meal. The Pico de gallo was fresh and good. The guacamole was average as the avocado wasn't fully ripe but overall OK, because I know it's hard to get good avocado in Hong Kong. However, if you've been to Mexican restaurants in the US, you know that the tortilla chips are usually served free. It's frankly a bit cheeky to charge almost US$10 for it.

Overall verdict:

Our meal cost just under HK$300 for two people (without tips or service charge). Due to the bad taste and small portion of the food, this seemed poor value. We can eat much better in Central at this price level.

Based on our experience with the "cheaper" menu of Socialito, we would not return to try the more expensive sit-down menu for the indoor restaurant.

However, we may give the place another try for only drinks, as the bar area inside is very nice and the staff is friendly. We would be very hesitant to order food. Drinks should be OK.
The outdoor section is a casual taqueria.

I started with their margarita and asked for it to be served on the rocks instead of frozen which they were happy to do and it was a good version. We ordered the beef tacos, pork tostada, chorizo quesadilla, salsa and chips with side order of guacamole. None of the food had any spicy kick so we asked for some jalapenos which we were charged for but was actually just a mild green pepper. We got the feeling the staff didn't even know what a jalapeno was. The salsa was a horrible blended sauce, not chunky with fresh tomatoes and onions, but the worst bit it actually just tasted of tobasco. The citrus sauce tasted slighty better. The side order of guacamole was a pathetic portion for the price and was not that tasty. On the plus side the chips were nice and crunchy. The pork tostada was not a tostada but came in a very hard to eat bun. The chorizo in the quesadilla was all mashed up so no crunchy texture from being fried first. I asked what white wine they had and the waiter didn't know and had to check the menu - there were only 2 types so you think he might be able to remember that! We saw some other diners eating a chunky salsa and asked them what it was like and they said OK but we couldn't understand why the salsa we had been given was different. At the table next to us people were smoking so we asked a waitress to tell them to move to the pavement as it is illegal. She couldn't ask them to do that because they were friends of the manageress! We asked them to move to the pavement whilst they smoked which they did so without any problem. We also asked to speak to the manageress who kept us waiting 10 minutes whilst she chatted with another of her friends who was also smoking at a table but at least it wasn't next to us! When she did finally come and speak with us her excuses for letting her friends smoke illegally were pathetic. I would have liked to try the inside dining room in the future but given this experience will never be back as the food and service were that bad.

We had:

Chorizo quesadilla
Mushroom quesadilla
Soft drink
Coconut juice 750 ml

Their open kitchen was inviting and we eagerly awaited our order to be served. Given that there were less than 8 customers in total at that time, our order still took around 15 minutes to be served. The quesadilla were small in size and probably suits those on strict diets. For my male friend it wasn't even a snack. The mushroom with cheese quesadilla tasted decent but probably not as good as some of the other Mexican joints in Central and Soho. Their prices were also higher, around $75 per quesadilla. The chorizo quesadilla was dry and tasteless, very disappointing. Overall we spent $265 and didn't feel satisfied at all. I suggest people try the dinner service as the lunch service was substandard. Definitely disappointed after the anticipation from reading about the opening.

Duck Taco was better, but not exactly memorable, not obviously of a much superior Mexican restaurant, though please enough.

The service was far from perfunctory and our waitress was not exactly clear with the menu instruction. I actually did enjoyed the fast food lunch, but this is not exactly the perfect Mexican restaurant.

Give me a thumbs up if you like it!

Stay forever W.

Lots of mexican restos popped up recently. I'm not a super big fan of mexican fare because of the heat and spice but having it once in a while is alright. Not sure why it's so expensive though. The ingredients used are pretty basic.

Environment:
We occupied a long table in a dimly lit corner of the restaurant. There is a sense of mystery about the place. The outside is almost like a fast food area where people can grab a bite and a drink without having to sit down for a serious meal. On the left, there is a thick, heavy, inconspicuous-looking metal door with a circular window. That leads to the sit-down dining area. That's not all. Upon entry, you are greeted by receptionist standing behind a small reception desk. There is another identical (?) door you have to go through before you arrive at the dining area. I quite liked the atmosphere. Lights are turned way down low and the place reminds me of the insides of a traditional American bistro. Quite relaxing.
quite dreamy.

We found our table against this radiating wall of silhouettes.

Service:
The servers were familiar with the dishes and could explain each dish adequately. Being very unfamiliar with Mexican food, we had some questions, which were answered to our satisfaction.
And people are quite friendly. They are also efficient and attentive, changing plates quickly between each course, filling our wine glasses quickly when empty (heh..). Not pushy.

Food:
Y had arranged for us to try the $580 dinner set, family style. On top of the set, we ordered around 4 whites. Apologies for the orientation of the photos but I am too lazy to make them upright

Chips were quite nice, crisp but not oily and lightly salted. I would've liked the tomato salsa and guacamole if there weren't any coriander in it.
it's not italian parsley. It is coriander.
But I found satisfaction just munching on the warm chips hee.

Again, coriander.
Ruined the dish for me but even if they took coriander out of the equation I suppose I still would not have liked this dish because of the seafood. The chips are not the same as those served with the guac. More like a baked pita or something. Also quite spicy.

Sodamngood. Don't wanna say anything about it because nothing I say will be adequate. Um. Perfectly salted, crisp exterior and soft tender interior, good meaty flavour, but the fat was quite evenly distributed so you don't feel like you're eating a lump of fat although practically speaking you probably are doing that.
The green peanut mole, whatever it is, was excellent with the pork. It's the green sauce that the pork belly is swimming in. Peanut slaw was refreshing and cold. Yeah. Hesitate not. Just order it.

I approach this dish with the same level of vigour as I did the pork belly. And my affection is targeted at the black blocks of grilled polenta. Kind of tasted like hash browns but more complex. Like...smoked polenta cutlet. Mm. And the duck breast was very tender - not too juicy, but very tender, and the mole negro juiced it up nicely.

Not as good as the other two mains I remember. The salmon was ever so slightly fishy and the outside didn't crisp up like I wanted my seared salmon to be. But I suppose it was a grilled steak - you can see the chargrill marks nicely hatched on the top...but I must say, the chanterelles and other mushrooms were again, a winner. Sigh. Oh and the potato puree was buttery and garlicky. Mmm.

Black beans - sauteed onion, roasted garlic, queso fresco; and sauteed wild mushrooms - shallots, garlic, thyme, brandy
again, wicked mushrooms

These sides were absolutely delicious - especially the sauteed wild mushrooms. You know how heavily biased I am towards mushrooms ya. So ridiculously good. I am easily satisfied. I also selfishly ate most of this delicious little side dish.

Would really like to come back and try out the other mains but you really are quite pricey, socialito.

I had no idea this place opened a month or two ago, Got lucky and stumbled upon it last week. In general, Mexican in HK is poor. I think sourcing quality ingredients is usually the issue... or maybe it is just my particular favorite style (more California than Tex Mex or very traditional/authentic). Or maybe it is the local cooks who simply don't understand what it takes to balance all of the flavors/textures/temperatures.Anyways, I am not a fan of Agave, Carumba, Coyote, Tequila, Mr Taco Tr

Or maybe it is the local cooks who simply don't understand what it takes to balance all of the flavors/textures/temperatures.

Anyways, I am not a fan of Agave, Carumba, Coyote, Tequila, Mr Taco Truck, or Taco Chaca (somethings at each are okay, but never a full meal). Only Brickhouse comes close with their tacos.

Re: Socialto. I only had a quick chorizo taco and chips with guacamole street side. Just seeing chorizo on the menu got me excited (and I wonder if they do a chorizo and eggs for breakfast?). Anyways, the corn tortilla was pretty good with plenty of chorizo (a bit overcooked though). I wish it had more guac, sour cream, cheese, etc to balance out the hefty amount of chorizo in each taco. Net/net, I give it a respectable 7 out of 10.

The chips are deep fried to order, which is a nice change from far too many places in HK using chips that taste like they were made days earlier. The guac was okay too, but perhaps a bit more cilantro would help. The portions of guac and salsa were a bit too small for the amount of chips given.

I actually missed the fact that there was a full restaurant inside until reading another review. I will definitely go back to try more of the menu later. I pray Socialito can satisfy my never ending quest for decent Mexican in HK. Ole'

After a nice dinner inside on Monday I was back on Tuesday to dive into some taco's outside. Both days left me feeling impressed and I look forward to going back, to either the inside or outside. And, as a Southern Californian I am extremely happy to have found the best fish taco in HK.

The food inside is very very good. It is fine dining Mexican food (almost feels weird to type that) at it's best. You can tell there is a lot of care put into each dish, visually and through taste. My favorites were the lobster and swordfish ceviche, foie gras tostada, and the pulled pork gorditas. Honorable mention, their chips and salsa were quite addicting. Lastly, the cocktails were really well done and packed a punch.

The food outside takes a more "simple" approach. And, you can get a few of the inside dishes outside (thankfully this includes the pulled pork gorditas). My highlight was undoubtedly the fish taco, grilled swordfish with fried onions make for a very impressive flavor very reminiscent of fish tacos from back home in San Diego but fancier. The pork belly taco also stood out, as did their Margarita (strong and refreshing).

Inside you get what you pay for. It is fine dining at it's best. Service is pretty good and I believe it will only get better as the restaurant gets comfortable.

Outside the tacos and gorditas range from $80 to $120 and you get 2 of each.
