A plenitude of eateries were situated in the small alleys of Wanchai branching off the main road and Odelice! was one of them. This was a homely little corner bistro which, as I was about to learn, served authentic French food at extremely reasonable prices. It was a hot summer night and coming from a wedding reception I whetted my appetite with the gazpacho - a tomato-based lumpy cold soup with garlic which was refreshing and teased one's taste buds at just the right tone. We began with the mixed tartine platter which had generous portions. The bresaola and goat cheese I liked best as the air-dried beef and the unique taste of the goat cheese blended together perfectly, the brie was rich and strong enough to not be overpowered by parma, and the salmon with sundried tomatoes and guacamole one was refreshing though my companion found it a bit salty. Next came the vegetarian galette with pine nuts which made this quite special; my companion, who couldn't stomach too heavy cheeses, felt the vinaigrette lightened the Sainte Maure goat cheese and was able to enjoy it. Out of the tempting list of desserts we selected a French crêpe with banana, honey and coconut cream as simple items were often paradoxically more taxing to prepare. We were not disappointed; its very aroma was mouth-watering, the bananas were ripe and the coconut cream was captivating. The variety of beverages was pleasing; the camomile tea and the mimosa were my companion's flu remedies, while I had quality brewed coffee which made a perfect end to the evening.
The service was warm and friendly, and for all this gorging the bill only amounted to $270 per head. Interested, we learnt more about this unpretentious cafe and restaurant which was both a popular lunch place and a great dining destination. It had become a favourite of office workers and French cheese lovers since its opening in early 2014. We were glad to know that the establishment had plans of expansion in other districts of Hong Kong and in Shanghai, with such lovely food and very affordable prices, we hope Odelice! would fast become the synonym to "a highly rated French bistro chain". Next time I would try out the famed pumpkin soup and the croque madames - bon appétit!
