Hysan Place was filled with crowds on Saturday nights! The Japanese Western wired café meant something to us thus my friend and I came for dinner. He was hungry and we had the seasonal special for two ($358) from soup to dessert. Daily soup- creamy seafood soupServed as an entrée. Daily soup- creamy seafood soup Served as an entrée. Filled half of the bowl with generous amount of ingredients. 50% seafood 50% soup.
Appetizer 1- Oyster Ajillo
Ajillo (Spanish- with garlic)
I am never an oyster lover but still tried one of them (three in total). I am far from an amateur to comment on oyster but it was fresh in my opinion. Appreciated the well-baked potatoes which were warm with crispy skin. One bad, as you can see, the sauce was extremely oily.
Appetizer 2- Shrimp & squid ceviche
Ceviche (Spanish) is typically made from raw fish marinated in citrus juice, usually lemon juice. The acid in citrus juice denatures the fish proteins and turns them firm in texture. Well-prepared that the shrimps indeed became firm. An appeptizing dish.
Main course 1- Seafood & Asparagus Linguini with Sea Urchin Sauce Shrimp, octopus, mussel, shrimp etc. in generous amount. Three pieces of well-cooked asparagus with mild and earthy flavor. Limited amount of linguini. The urchin sauce is with mild sweetness, but not umami enough. Would be better for me if the amount of linguini and seafood were more balanced.
Main course 2- Braised Chicken with Vegetables Nicely braised chicken+ Fresh vegetables+ Deep-fried potatoes. Tasted incredibly well when the apparently not-so-matched (personal view) ingredients mixed together.
Dessert 1- Mango Mille Feuille Mille Feuille (as known as 'a thousand layers') is one of my favorite desserts but this was not. With two layers of puff pastry and one layer of cream and mango, it simply did not match so well. The layers of the fruity dessert was not harmonized but separated.
Dessert 2- Mini Dutch Baby Pancake My cup of tea and highly recommend! German Pancake as known as Dutch Baby is an oven baked pancake. The beauty of this ‘baby’ lies on the rise in the absence of leavening- its rise merely relies on the fats from egg. The golden brown pancake was baked and served in a skillet, then sprinkled with lemon juices and maple syrup, as well as with vanilla ice-cream spread on. The puffiness and sweetness took my taste buds on a trip to heaven!
