I visited at 1.30pm on a weekday, and there was a 5 minute wait. The dumplings came first, and were hot and juicy. The filling is bursting with pork and crunchy cabbage. Unfortunately, the base was not crispy, but overall, it was a decent gyoza.
The ramen came about 10 minutes later, which gave me a chance to eat all the gyoza first. It was a rich, dark broth with both tonkotsu and bonito flavours, without being overly salty. It had an intense meatiness, and a slightly gelatinous and gritty consistency. It came with half a soft-centred egg, a big piece of fatty pork belly, and a young bamboo shoot. The combination was really delicious and satisfying, and the flavours transport me to Japan.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this little restaurant. While the decor and music are typically Japanese, the manner and service is truly local. There was continual chatter and banter between the floor staff and the kitchen. The waitress is loud and smiling in a casual, friendly way, and it felt like I've stepped into a friend's home.
Lovely to find a local but authentic Japanese restaurant in this area.
