I stumbled upon Return Coffee Roastery while walking from the Ngau Tau Kok MTR to my office in busy Kwun Tong. Boy, was I shocked to find a warm, spacious, open coffee shop that would look at home in Portland, Oregon in the midst of East Kowloon’s dingy, crumbling warehouses and apartment blocks. $28 gets you an espresso beverage and the pastry of your choice in a cute to-go box. The 3-5 minute wait for your drink is well worth it – the milk is always perfectly steamed and the espresso is always perfectly smooth, no sugar needed. The pastries are great too; I adore the croissants and dense but moist and lightly sweet blueberry muffins.
While I haven’t had lunch at Return yet, the food that the friendly staff preps looks fantastic. They serve a small menu of Western breakfast favorites (soft scrambled eggs, toast) and lovely sandwiches. Truly an asset to the neighborhood. The price is right and the atmosphere is just perfect to get some work done, enjoy a conversation over lunch, or appreciate some of Hong Kong’s best coffee in peace.
