Cafés, tea houses and ramen shops are the hot eateries in Hong Kong where people mind not spending an hour to queue for a table. Although located in Sheung Wan, this Sinmei Tea resides in a commercial building rather than those street side cafes in Tai Ping Shan Street or Po Hing Fong area. I have heard much about this tea house and learned that it’s specialized in green tea food and beverages. On a weekday afternoon, I had luck to grab a table when I stepped into it. The interior design of a traditional tea house with arches and furniture of rosewood forms a big contrast with the western food it serves. Will around 10 tables, mostly girls, the noisy environment is not a relaxing place for a meal. I saw room for improvement in service as the staff are less than patient in serving their customers. I was surprised when told that tea sets have to be pre-ordered in advance! There are lots of choices for an afternoon meal costing $100+.
a) Matcha Mojito ($42) – 8.5/10 Green tea worked very well with mint and lime in this virgin mojito. Rich in green tea and with loads of mint leaves, very refreshing as a summer drink.
b) Organic Tofu Burger ($85) – 7.5/10 I quite regretted not to pick a green tea dessert like all the other diners around did but I just want something savoury at that moment. This was quite a simple burger that I could made at home at 1/5 of the cost. The tofu would fall apart if you grab and munch the burger.
