I visited yardbird last week for dinner with friends. Surprisingly the restaurant doesn't take reservations so we had to wait for almost an hour before we could finally get a table. The name is a literal translation of "Iwatori" in Japanese where Iwa means Yard and Tori is Bird. 10 years in Japan has spoiled my palette with some fascinating yakitori(grilled chicken) so when i heard about the hype of the restaurant my expectations were high. AMBIANCE: Simple which works well for a yakitori restaurant. The music is bit loud so difficult to make conversation.
FOOD: The meat quality was very good. Some signature dishes such as corn tempura and ceaser salad had very good Japanese flavor and the marination for grilled chicken was close to perfect. However certain very simple yet important details were missing. For e.g. the sauce was too much for the egg yolk for tsukune (minced meat) skewer, miso soup had too strong flavor and too much green leaves etc. The portion size was very small as well.
PRICE: I thought that the prices were too high. It was more expensive than some of the best yakitori places in Japan. Prices of drinks such umeshu (110$), miso soup(55$) and each skewer (around 38-40$) is extremely high.
Overall, i was quite happy with the food and thought that it was one of the better japanese restaurants. It is definitely one of the best yakitori places I've been to in HK. Would consider going back if my wallet allows me to.
Eat well as life is too short to eat shitty food
