We (a party 3 adults and 2 children) ate at Loaf On last Friday for lunch. When we arrived, the restaurant was not busy at all. The waiter, a middle aged man who took our order, however, was extremely impatient. He was trying to hard sell to us a fish for around 2,000 HKD. When my wife, who speaks Cantonese, questioned why the fish is so expensive, he literally rolled his eyes and said because only his fish is wild caught and the others in the market are all farm raised. When we decided not to go with the fish, he became increasingly impatient and rude.

He was also deceitful as when asked about price, he only told us the price of the seafood (we didn’t bring in anything, all seafood came from the restaurant) and not mentioning at all there is extra for cooking any seafood dish.

Later, when he brought the dishes to us, he didn’t even bother to explain what the dish is. At one point, my wife asked what one dish is (it was steamed aubergine but covered by glass noodle, so it is hard to tell), he literally walked away from our table , turned back and shouted to my wife “it is aubergine!” It was so loud that the neighboring table turned their heads to see what happened. At that point I was so angry that I almost shouted back, but at the end we decided not to make a scene as the waiter did.

Overall, the food is decent. The so called signature dishes (the tofu, the abalone, and the spicy snail) are reasonable but nothing spectacular. The bill ended up to be a bit above 500 dollars per head (again, we are not happy that we were not only the prices for seafood and cooking are separate), which is not completely outrageous, but definitely not good value (considering we are only three adults and the kids barely ate any seafood). The lack of price transparency is certainly off putting. The worst part is, for a Michelin one star restaurant, I would expect a certain level of service. What we experienced at Loaf On is far below the bar.
