We had the lunch buffet on a holiday Monday at Jashan, a long-time Indian staple in Central, on Hollywood Road right next to the escalator, and with an interesting view of the new bridge to the Tai Twun centre. To use an old cliche, lots of the other customers here are Indian, which is always a good sign. The staff are friendly and helpful, happy to explain what the dishes are, and quick to take a plate or fill a glass. We were offered drinks to start - sweet/salt/mango lassi (yogurt drink), l
The main buffet has lamb, butter chicken, spinach with potato and peas, daal (lentils), paneer (cheese) and eggplant, while there are vegetable patties, fried cauliflower, shrimp and chicken tikka for starters. Plain and pilau rice, salad, poppadoms, chutneys and sauces are available for sides.
I didn't try everything, but the standouts for me were the spinach, well balanced with a nice tingle, the paneer which was firm, with a mild sauce, the dosa, and the veggie starters
For dessert, there was pineapple and watermelon, ras malai (a sweet milk/cheese cake in creamy sauce) and gulab jamun (also sweet milk cake, in syrup). All good, but I don't think I've had ras malai before and it was a very pleasant discovery!
Shout out to the manager who was working the room, checking everybody was enjoying their meal, even to the extent of bringing me an extra dish after I'd checked which of the mains were vegetarian - completely unnecessary, since Indian food is one of the most veggie-friendly already, but very welcome!
