We had a girls’ night at Restoration.

When we turned up, there was no table for us as the restaurant messed up our reservation. They somehow booked us for a day later. But the staff was very nice and tried their best to accommodate us. The restaurant was full but they managed to set up 3 bar seats by the kitchen for us.

The décor of the restaurant is very shabby chic. They also use mismatched plates which is very cite. Think it leans towards the feminine side which we really loved. But my friend commented that she wouldn’t bring her husband here because it felt too feminine. The tables were very close together and it was pretty loud so a little difficult to talk.

We shared a Gumbo and Crab Crème Brulee for appetizers. The waiter told us the Gumbo was enough for 4-5 people to share but when it came out it was in a small jar and just enough for 2 people to get a taste. The Gumbo was thick with some added rice and had a nice smokey flavor. I would like to see more okra in it though but overall it was pretty satisfying! The Crab Crème Burlee was really disappointing on the other hand. I expected something really creamy and smooth like the dessert but it was basically a small slice of crab quiche with almost no crab meat and very dry pastry.

For mains we wanted the crab cake but it was sold out so we ordered the Fried Chicken, Shrimp and Grits and Blackened Fish. The fried chicken was the best, it was moist and crunchy and had good flavors. But I suppose the restaurant better get the chicken right when they’re charging close to $300 for 4 pieces of fried chicken (the mains didn’t come with any side dishes). I personally like the blackened fish the best, it was the most flavorful. The shrimp and grits was the worst, the shrimp was over cooked. Sitting by the kitchen, I saw there was a bowl of pre-cooked shrimp sitting by the window and I couldn’t help wonder if they used the cooked shrimps and just re-heated when customers ordered and that’s why the shrimp was so over-cooked? The grits was very grainy and lacked the creamy texture that I was really looking forward to.

The manager sent us free desserts because they messed up our reservation. We had the beignets, ice cream sandwich and pecan pie. The beignets were really heavy and tasted like fried dough with powdered sugar. The ice cream sandwich came half melted and we saw the restaurant use Nestle ice cream. I don’t think the cookies are homemade either as they taste stale and hard. The pecan pie was the best dessert. Have to say all of the desserts were terrible and we were really glad we didn’t have to pay for them. Would highly suggest you go somewhere else for desserts.

There was free corkage when we went as the restaurant is still waiting for their liquor license but the manager mentioned that they should be getting it shortly.

The service was great with very friendly staff and hospitable manager.

It's nice to see a one of the kind restaurant with different concept in Hong Kong.
