Villa Villa is a restaurant we have heard about. It's extremely popular even though it's hidden away in a small side street. It seemed every time we walked by, it was busy. So we decided to find out what the hype was all about and came here early to beat the crowds. Menu is in English and Chinese with photos of most of what they serve. They also offer sets for two that are in Chinse only. However, even if you don't want to order from the sets, all mains come with a daily soup and bread. Also, if you leave before 7:30 pm, they offer a 20% discount. They also offer pastries and cakes with any print of choice for pre-order. They seem to do a lot!
We didn't want to do the sets as we weren't fond of a few of the choices, so we went a la carte.We started with drinks. I had the Fruit Tea ($68). Sweetened only by the flavour of the fruit with the fragrant tea as the base. Fruit included apples, lemon, grapes and blueberries. These were fresh and the apples even soaked up the tea very well.
Boyfriend ordered the Rose Lychee Tea ($45) and it came out in a surprising display of foam that looked like an afro. The foam was sweet with a slight citrus taste. The staff informed us it was actually Sprite, foamed up. Interesting! The drink was bubbly with a hint of rose and sweet enough for boyfriend to please.
Complimentary soup and bread is provided with every order of main. The soup of the day was a truffle mushroom sop that was extremely creamy with a heavy taste of truffle oil. The bread was a charcoal foccacia smeared with a bit of garlic butter.
Deep Fried Chicken Wings ($48) were the best thing we ordered! These were so good. The skin was crisp. The seasoning on point. And the wings were so juicy, the oil just spilled out when I bit into it. It was also served with a side of salad that was actually dressed. I note this because usually you get just greens with no dressing, signaling that it really is for decoration only.
Scallops With Smoked Cheese Ravioli ($198) was very rich. The scallops were lightly seared. The ravioli were really good and stuffed to the brim with a rich decadent cheese filling with a slight smokey taste. All was dressed in a rich cheese sauce.
We shared another main of Sous Vide US Kurobuto Pork Chop with Gravy ($220). A very generous portion. The pork chop was melt in your mouth tender and juicy. Hidden underneath was a smear of buttery rich mashed potato. All was coated in a rich smooth onion gravy. A side of salad dressed in yuzu onion dressing was also provided.
We ended with a cake: Earl Grey Ganache ($48). Not expensive at all. The cake was rich and moist. A slight taste of the tea could be detected but it was mostly chocolate. This was really good cake.
Now we know why it's so popular. The food was not only delicious but the portions were more than generous and not lazily slapped together. Prices not expensive. The staff were very friendly and chatted with all the customers as if this was private get together with friends. My coworker suggested I try the pizza next time. Perhaps I will!
