Having just turned a vegetarian, I must say it’s not always easy to find an eatery that suits the appetites of me and my friends who are not as keen to go green especially in a food heaven like HK where the temptations are plenty. Just last weekend, I found my oasis! My gals and I decided that we want to enjoy the sunny Saturday by having an alfresco gossipy brunch. One of the gals suggested Brick Lane which has apparently just opened their new branch on the island.

First time I tried this restaurant even though I was told they serve marvelous egg benedicts and All-days, I had been too hesitated to go across the harbor just for food. Well, I am impressed - not only by the food but also the stylish décor and of course, the huge outdoor space and the island bar.

Some of my gals decided to start the day with bubbles, but I decided to go for a cocktail. The enthusiastic server suggested to me Passion Martini which is a vodka base cocktail mixed with fresh passion fruit and cassis. When it came, a fire was lighted up in ½ a passion fruit shell, splendidly floating in the middle. It was very refreshing and delicious, perfect for the relaxing mood I had.

I was pleasantly surprised by the good selection of vegetarian dishes the restaurant caters. There is even a vegetarian version of their infamous egg benedict dish, which I have chosen alongside some nachos to share with the gals. The gals went crazy with their selections ranging from all day breakfast, egg benedicts, pancakes. Some got carried away and seemingly had forgotten about their diet plans and decided to have a go at the carving station. The nachos were properly piled up and grilled with cheddar then topped with generous scoops of sour cream and guacamole. The chips were crunchy and tasted a hint of spices. The Florentine Egg Benedict was made to perfection with runny poached eggs and creamy hollandaise sauce atop some spinach and a warm buttered English muffin.

While I can’t report on the taste of the dishes my friends had, I can say that the presentation is appealing and authentically British. I was being told the food is also very tasty. To wrap up the long lazy morning/afternoon, we picked a selection of desserts which apparently are also their specialty. I love the Red Velvet Cake and the Eton Mess,

all remind me so much of the real Brick Lane in London, only with better texture and taste. The Red Velvet is very moist and spongy with a subtle sweetness that goes with a smooth cream cheese mousse (I think it is mousse rather than cream), and is so different from the hard core sweet hard red velvet butter cakes they sell in the UK. Great place surely worth recommending especially to vegans.
