On my second visit to Sooo Vege I decided to try out the larger store which is a little closer to Tin Hau and fully enclosed (and therefore air conditioned). The atmosphere was a little weird, not unpleasant but it felt more like a coffee shop than a restaurant. The menu appears to be the same in both stores and as I ordered the Mexican wrap last time I wanted to try something a bit different this time. I settled on the fried stuffed vegetables as an appetiser and tofu skin with creamy sweetcorn
I settled on the fried stuffed vegetables as an appetiser and tofu skin with creamy sweetcorn and rice.
Whilst I was waiting I could hear and smell the food cooking, there is something oh so appealing about the crackle and pop of things cooking in a frying pan and it got me excited for my dinner. The food took about ten to fifteen minutes to arrive which is reasonable given that it's at least partially cooked fresh. Both dishes were served together which was ok but not quite an appetiser-and-main situation (I guess the stuffed vegetables were prepared then and there whilst the main was precooked). And sadly, despite my desire to enjoy the food offered by this very different kind of vegetarian restaurant I just couldn't.
The fried stuffed veggies - there were three kinds of vegetables, aubergine, mushrooms and pepper. I am happy about one, ambivalent about one and dislike the third. Of course Sooo Veggie is not to blame for my poor choice (in my defence it doesn't say what the vegetables are on the menu - perhaps I could have guessed), but I really did not like these except for the green pepper ones and even they were a little too oily. They were stuffed with a meaty-tasting tofu mixture which was the best thing about the dish. I wouldn't order it again though.
The tofu skins in creamy sweetcorn sauce - a dish of mixed opinions. Positives first: I loved the texture of the tofu, chewy and a little tough, it felt really satisfying to bite through it, also the rice helped to soak up the sauce nicely. Now the negatives: the tofu was sooo salty! In fact as the dish had next to no flavour, salt was the dominant flavour/sensory experience, the tofu would have benefited from being rinsed before being cooked. Next, the 'creamy' sauce was not so much creamy, more gelatinous or gloopy, that is not necessarily a complaint, it feels interesting in the mouth but I definitely would not describe it as creamy. And finally, the sweetcorn seemed to have suffered from overcooking, all the kernels were nothing more than empty husks, the insides were hollow.
I do so want to like the food here. I like the design, I like the way they pick and mix cuisines, I like the way they make use of both tofu and fake meat in the dishes best suited to each ingredient's strengths. It should work but it just didn't quite tonight. Maybe I just picked the wrong dishes. I was also thinking about having the spaghetti bolognaise or the Sichuan mapo tofu so perhaps when I feel game for a risk I will come again.
