The grilled cheese sandwiches were the first things that caught my eye on the menu. Usually found on children’s menus at other restaurants, the sandwiches are a specialty at Jack & June, with five different flavor options, including two with bacon and another pizzalike one with pepperoni, cream cheese and mozzarella. They are served with a choice of a side.
Entrees are right out of your mother's or grandmother’s kitchen. Many of the dishes are mildly seasoned, catering to Midwest taste buds. On one of my visits, I enjoyed a Jack-size meatloaf. The slice was dense, not crumbly, and hickory smoked, which was evident on the first bite. It, too, included a choice of a side.
From the sandwich menu, I recommend patty melt, a grilled hamburger with Swiss cheese, tasty and with plentiful grilled onions on thick-sliced toasted bread. I accompanied mine with a German-inspired spaetzle, blandish egg noodles that I spiced up with some salt and pepper.
Appetizers include deviled eggs , made from secret recipe, and piping hot, puffy pretzel sticks served alone or with a homemade green onion or pimento cheese dip. Both are recommended.
The desserts are homestyle, too, ranging from apple pie to angel food cake to a hot, fruit cobbler. Grade: A
Atmosphere
The Journal Star recently spotlighted the restaurant’s design, chronicling Jack & June’s use of reclaimed woods and materials, including an old basketball floor and a portion of a pickup, to create a hip and happening place.
The restaurant features three distinct areas. The “Jack” side is the main dining room and bar, right off the entrance. The “June” side is the lounge with stocked bar, where food is available, but is meant more for drinks and conversation. Upstairs is a party/meeting room, with a big-screen television and beer tap.
Among the personal touches are different salt-and-pepper shakers at each table (June collected them) and a lone green chair found at a table in the Jack portion of the restaurant (Jack always sat at a green chair). Grade: A
Service
I recommend dinner reservations, which can be made through the restaurant’s website. We had them when dining with friends during the restaurant’s first week and were glad we did.
As for a recent lunch, the service was outstanding, with our appetizer arriving less than five minutes after ordering and our entrees coming out of the kitchen a short time later. My co-worker and I finished our lunch visit in 45 minutes. Grade: A
