Lawry's The Prime Rib is a famous Californean restaurant, serving rib roasts as their No. 1 specialty. Since the opening of its original restaurant back in 1938, Lawry's has expanded quite a bit - to Singapore, Toyko, Taipei - and of course, Hong Kong.Eager to try this renown American chain, I decided to go for a 3-course lunch. For starters, Lawry is known for their Famous Original Spinning Bowl Salad. Eager to try this renown American chain, I decided to go for a 3-course lunch. For starters, Lawry is known for their Famous Original Spinning Bowl Salad. As the name suggests, it's prepared by tossing (or "spinning") the salad on top of an iced bowl, to keep the lettuce nice and fresh. I was also given an "ice cold" fork to eat this with - but it didn't really make that much of a difference, in my opinion.
The gimmicky part is that the waitress, dressed in a '30s maid's uniform, prepares the salad in front of you. I guess the idea of "live cooking" is meant to win extra brownie points...? Or, translated into tips, if you wish.
The salad itself is made up of romaine and iceberg lettuce, baby spinach, shredded beets, chopped eggs and croutons with a classic vintage dressing. I really enjoyed this as I felt that everything was perfectly executed. From the lettuce being crisp and fresh to the croutons being soft (yet still with a bite to them), everything was perfect to a t. I also liked the difference in texture between the crunchy salad and the softness of the shredded beet and chopped (boiled) eggs. The dressing was also very different and nice - somewhat sour/spicy, making the salad overall very flavourful. Massive yorkshire pudding on the side!
For mains, I ordered the Roasted Prime Rib of Beef Jus (Hong Kong Cut) with mashed potatoes and yorkshire pudding. Naturally, I did some research before coming here - so here's some quick facts:
* Rib roast refers to cut of the beef.
* Meat is incredibly juicy and tender. Can be bought with/without the bone.
* It's sometimes called "prime rib" to indicate it's USDA graded.
* USDA prime graded (US Dept of Agriculture) means top quality beef.
Having learned all of the above, I was really happy to see that the meat had met my expectations. The meat was incredibly tender and tasty (due to the gravy), making it a very memorable and commendable main course. However, it's just somewhat disappointing to see it plated with your bog standard mashed potatoes. For a main so good, you'd expect everything else to be perfect. Sadly this was not the case; I found the mash way too buttery, making it forgettable in my opinion.
In contrast, I really liked the yorkshire pudding. It actually reminded me of pancakes because the interior was so soft, fluffy and tasted like egg! My only issue was that its portion was too large. From the photo above, the yorkshire pudding put on my plate was only a quarter of what I was given. I was given a separate pan, carrying the remainder, which I could barely finish as I was way too full! For dessert, I went for the Warm Chocolate Fantasy Cake. By this time, I was already stuffed - but no review is complete without dessert - so I went ahead and ordered it anyway! The cake itself is actually the same as a chocolate lava cake, except the "lava" is on the outside. The chocolate was extremely rich and sweet (almost too sweet), so it was nice to see that they served vanilla ice cream and whipped cream on the side to counteract the flavours.
Compared to the starter and main, this was probably least favourite. Not that it was bad or anything, but not as special and exciting as the other two. Still good though.
Setting-wise, Lawry's presents itself as a high-end restaurant, with dim ambient lighting, velvet sofas and posh dining table chairs. Setting alone, I thought it could pass off as hotel quality.
But I must admit, when I first read about Lawry's, I imagined it as a posh American diner. Perhaps I was thinking along the lines of Ruby Tuesday, but had I not seen pictures beforehand, I would've been seriously underdressed - definitely much fancier than an American diner!
Finally for service, this was certainly one of the friendliest restaurants I've ever been to. Everyone was extremely accommodating, asking between each course whether I liked the food or not. I guess it was because I got so much "face time" with the staff as they prepared the salad/cut the beef in front of me. That, I think, is pretty smart. It guarantees that your diners will never be ignored!
Overall, nothing but good things to say about Lawry's. While not necessarily the best choice for a family outing or catching up with girlfriends, it's definitely the perfect location for a business lunch. So next time, bring your client!
