When Lady M came to Hong Kong, it introduced Hong Kongers to Mille Crepe Cake. The cake that is made with several layers of crepe sandwiched between layers of cream. And since then, other pastry shops have come up with their own to try to rival Lady M (who is Bon Appetit's gold standard).One such place that has become popular with the crepe cake is Shaz Confections. One such place that has become popular with the crepe cake is Shaz Confections. Located in Sai Ying Pun, a small cake shop that sold only crepe cake, it gained a following and now has opened a branch in K11. I decided to give it a try.
The place isn't very big. If you dine in, there is a 10% service charge.
Menu is in English and Chinese. They appear to have regular cafe food.
Along with a listing of their cakes.
They also have various drinks.
I decided on this: charcoal black sesame ($68). Price is a bit cheaper than Lady M. It was truly black in color.
The layers looked decent but it appeared the bottom layer was sponge cake. The top was a layer of gel-like glaze that made it a bit chewier. Slicing my fork down the cake, it didn't fall apart. It held together well. Unlike Lady M, where the amount of cream was the perfect amount to not feel overly full, this one appeared to have more cream. I was fairly full after having this. The taste was supposed to be sesame but it wasn't as strong as expected. It was there but it wasn't intense. A bit disappointing.
I had a latte ($38). It was ok. Not that great but acceptable enough. Milk froth was a bit too grainy though. But I guess they are more famous for the cakes than coffee.
The cakes were fine but not as good as Lady M. Price of $68 maybe steep but then again Lady M costs about $80 a slice. And this cake is a lot of work to create. Would I be back? Maybe?
