SHO-EN is one of the chain restaurants under En group. The rest include "En" in Tsim Sha Sha, which used to serve Okinawa dishes and is considered the forerunner of Okinawa cuisine here.Perhaps since Okinawa cuisine is so difficult to find here, the price they charge is hardly reasonable for humble Okinawa dishes. Perhaps since Okinawa cuisine is so difficult to find here, the price they charge is hardly reasonable for humble Okinawa dishes. I always go back though for the group's ソーキそば (noodles with pork ribs) with loads of コーレーグース(chilli peppers soaked in awamori) added, even at a price of $98 for a small bowl. I went a couple of times there just for this. WARNING: This all-you-can-eat course is strictly for meat lovers. It boasts of pork and beef from Okinawa, but the same is not stated for crabs, so it made me wonder...
Anyway, I have come across companions with small stomachs who surrendered just after the "appetizers" (What a shame!!) The Okinawa spirit was in full gear with Orion beer and シークァーサー (Okinawa fruit which is a cross between lime and mandarin) drink. While awaiting the water in the pot to boil, there was always room for some sumptious appetizers with a little Okinawa flavour. One never wants to miss the ゴーヤー (bitter melon) and ジーマーミー豆腐 (peanut tofu), and these were made beautifully and true to Okinawa spirit. The stewed tongue was tasty and the sashimi was fresh. Even the small dishes which were not supposed to be the heroes of the night were not taken lightly. My compliments. There was nothing fancy about the soup (half was clear soup with soy sauce and half was pork soup) I preferred it this way because the natural flavour of the meat could stand out. The fat distribution of the beef really looked pretty and the meat tasted flavourful and fresh. However the spotlight for me was the Okinawa Agu pork. The sweetness of the meat just danced in the mouth with the right "bounciness", and without the at times repulsive "piggy stink". The quality of the crab was more than perfect for all-you-can-eat course. I am usually not a crab person just because I am lazy. But there I was just too willing to succumb to all the fuzz in the "dismemberment" process. Who cares where these crabs come from? They were delicious and I did not end up with an upset stomach. After several plates of meat, the soup was ready for some vegetables and a nice bowl of udon. I always prefer udon to congee if the udon was chewy with wonderful flour taste. Though I am a big fan of grilled meat, I cannot resist a night of hotpot with beautiful Okinawa meat. Whenever I yearn for "pure" meat, this is the place to be.
