真材实料 is not a restaurant appeal to us even though we have been resident of the area for a good year and a half. Since we would soon be moving away soon, we have a mission of trying all the restaurants on the street. We have ordered 霸王鸡 and a fish and tofu pot as part of a meal for two. The soup was disappointing to start with, just a below average watercress soup. Even my staff canteen does a better job…The霸王鸡 hasn’t changed our mind either. The霸王鸡 hasn’t changed our mind either. First, the portion was ‘skinny’, second, there was no succulence from the chicken and there is no taste to the sauce. The sesame oil in the condiment section doesn’t help either which has lost its flavour. The quality of plain rice is hard to find in town these days, it is literally hard with bits of black spots on the grain, but it is no unpolished rice...
The Fish and Tofu pot is much better in quality with fish properly battered and seasoned to taste. In terms of oiliness, it is soaked in oil with no surprise.
A choice of drink or dessert to finish. Please note, +$2 for hot honey lemon (classified as special drinks) and +$2 for cold drinks, as they would not inform you until you order. The bill came to $164 for two which is absurd for the kind of quality, portion size and service. In the given area, you will be able to find value for money in most places. Our recent favorite being顺丰 on 清风街, their the new address is not on openrice yet.
All in all, not a bad meal, but if it wasn’t for the name真材实料, we wouldn’t have such high expectations, but you will be able to find better in the area that offers value for money and real ingredients. A word of advice, don’t waste your quota.
