Tired of the usual Thai food you get in nice restaurants. Where plates are pretty and it's all comfortable? Miss those days of sitting on a street in Thailand, eating away while the dust flies at you? Because you know ... that kind of food brings excitement. It's not boring. It's not refined. It's made from the heart by small families who care. And you think to yourself ... can't  seem to find that in Hong Kong.Well, yes you can. It's hard to find. Well, yes you can. It's hard to find. So, I introduce you to one such place called Tonkla Thai Snack (Chinese name: 迦米泰式小). Located in North Point, it's across the street  from the North Point wet food market that houses the popular Tung Po Kitchen. It's street level and is a small yet cramped place.  There is nothing comfortable here but believe me, the food is amazing. Kitchen is on one side where you'll see two Thai men cooking away, the fragrant smell of Thai spices and herbs fill the air. They have a very pretty Thai waitress who does speak decent Cantonese.

Menu is in Chinese and English. There is no 10% service charge. Prices are inexpensive and it seemed everything was under $100.

We started with Thai ice tea with milk ($18 on the left) and a Thai ice lemon tea ($18 on the right). It wasn't filled with a lot of ice but it was still fairly cold. The milk tea was fragrant with a hint of spices as was the ice lemon tea.

Satay Chicken and Pork ($15 a stick). We ordered two chicken satay sticks and one pork. The meat was moist and juicy. It had a good char from the amazing grill work that was done. The satay sauce was a bit spicy but not too much. It was also rich in flavor.

Grilled Thai Sausage ($15). I thought it was ok but boyfriend didn't like it. It's like Chinese sausage except there appeared to be mixed with vermicelli in it. I thought it was ok. Crispy but really pretty oily.

It came with a spicy sour dipping sauce.

Thai Beef Ball Noodle  Soup ($43). What I loved here was the beef balls. They had a firm al dente bite to them. There were also slices of tender beef slices. The noodles were firm and chewy. The soup base was a rich beef broth.

Pad Krapow Fried Egg with Noodle ($55). We decided to get something other than pad thai so tried this instead. It was a noodle with a rich mince meat sauce on top. It wasn't strong in flavor compared to what we ordered previously.

Portions were generous. Food was delicious. May not be comfortable, but it's down to earth food. Fast and delicious. And that is what Thai food is really all about in a way. May be back.
