I've never been to Malaysia. I did go to Singapore once, but I was eating so many things I actually never got around to the laksa. So, fair warning: I have no idea whether Malaymama does things authentically, or whether it's good when compared to real Malaysian food. All I know is what it tastes like to me.I ordered the special laksa with egg noodles. I ordered the special laksa with egg noodles. It comes with 3 king prawns, 2 cockles, 3 or so fish cakes, a little bit of shredded chicken, 4 or 5 cubes of tofu, and a some bean sprouts. The prawns were nice and tender, served piping hot, and their shells were soft and easy to eat. I barely noticed the cockles. The fish cakes were also tender and "meaty" without a strong fish flavor. The shredded chicken wasn't all that substantial, but like everything else it was soft and tender, with a pleasing taste. I liked the style of tofu-- I think it's fried. It's really good as sopping up broth, which is precisely what one wants with a dish like this. The broth was pretty flavorful. It was a little bit greasy, not overly coconut-y or curry-tasting. I thought it was nicely balanced. The egg noodles were plentiful (though you can't see them in the picture, they're hiding). I found them nicely al dente, but quite difficult to retrieve from the bowl. In the end I was happy with the soup and completely filled up. I give it a B+, good.
We also had some Kaya toast. This is toast with a spread made out of eggs, coconut milk, and sugar or condensed milk. Sweets aren't really my thing, but I thought the bread here was actually good (surprising for HK) toasted perfectly. It was not unlike a peanut butter sandwich. (I have no idea how to rate this.)In general, if I want soup, I'd much rather have pho, or brisket noodles at Mak's, or Yunnan spicy noodles or... well, most anything. I just don't crave coconut milk or shrimp or fish cakes. That being said, I was completely satisfied witht the soup here, as well as the service and the price. Next time I'll try the laksa place across the street. For now I give this place a B+.
