Japanese Restaurant Doraya has been in Hong Kong for the past 20 years. Orginally selling tuna wholesale, they opened this little restaurant serving very fresh sashimi donburi before it was trendy. But as there are always new restaurants, I tend to forget about this place until one day I realized ... it's been a while. And do a revisit. And every time I do, it's always good. The place is very very small. And it's popular. So popular that at lunch time, they have a 40 minute dining period.Menu is
The place is very very small. And it's popular. So popular that at lunch time, they have a 40 minute dining period.
Menu is in Japanese and Chinese. There is no English but there are photos of everything. At lunch, they offer value for money sets. I decided to get the Minced Tuna Don and Noodle Set ($106) as I always feel this is the best value. The set comes with an appetizer, chawanmushi and fruit as dessert. You also get a choice of sushi rice or normal rice. I have no idea who would go to a Japanese restaurant and request normal rice??
You get a small mince tuna don. Though it was the right amount so it was small but not so small it felt like a rip off. The mince tuna was fresh. There was some nori on top. The set allows you to choose a type of noodle. I got the cold soba. It came with a small cup filled with dipping sauce, some wasabi and spring onions. The noodles were springy and smooth. The chawanmushi was sof and jiggly. It was savory and there was shitake mushrooms, chicken meat, ginko nuts and Japanese fish cake, The appetizer of the day was sweetened soybeans with seaweed. Lastly two slices of orange were provided as the dessert. These were very sweet and easy to peel as they had slightly sliced the fruit from the skin.
The sets are all very good value for money. The tuna was fresh and the quality of the food was high. After all these years, they still maintain its quality. And I'm glad.
