Sister and I came here for lunch the other day. I didn't hold any expectations after the debacle that happened at the Pizza Express in Soho a few months back (they charged us a ridiculous amount for bottled water without asking, we ordered about two pizzas and the total came out to about $500+).

We made reservations but had to wait a minute or two for them to clear the table, the waiter at that point was agitated but not unfriendly. Neither of us wanted to order a set lunch (we were hungry!), so we decided upon soups, a salad, a pasta and a pizza.

For the soup we both ordered the Mixed Mushroom Soup (野菌汤). I was very impressed by the quality. It had a rich aromatic taste, with plenty of mixed mushrooms and the truffle oil giving it a little kick. The portion was quite generous, and it definitely whetted my appetite for what was to come.

For the salad we shared a Nostrana (牛油果鸡肉沙拉) that contained chicken breast, avocado, potatoes, green peppers, boiled egg and mixed greens tossed with their "signature dressing". It wasn't anything special. The dressing reminded me of a sweet ranch dressing with extra mayonnaise. The greens, peppers and avocado were not that fresh. But the chicken was cooked fairly well, it wasn't dry (as it is in most salads) and fairly tender.

For our mains, my sister ordered Penne al Salmone (烟三文鱼长通粉) - smoked salmon and asparagus with penne on a creamy garlic and leak sauce. I ordered the Roman (thin crust) Rucula e Prosciutto (义大利生菜火腿薄饼) - parma ham with rocket leaves over garlic, olives and grated cheese. The pasta had a great taste, despite being a little thrifty with the salmon. My problem with penne is that it doesn't seem to bring out the taste of the sauces all the well, and it was a little overcooked. My pizza was fantastic. The crust was thin and well made, and while neither the prosciutto nor the salmon was of superior quality, the taste of the garlic, olives and cheese complemented them to a T. I was planning on having half and saving the rest for later, but my sister and I ended up polishing off both dishes, and feeling guilty afterward!

By the end of it, we were too stuffed to have dessert. The bill came out to about $500 again (we had drinks), but this time I was very satisfied with the journey. It's not the cheapest lunch out in Tai Koo, but the food was definitely decent. Drop by if you're jonesing for some not-so-traditional Italian!
