Overwhelmed by the cluster of restaurants in SOHO area on the day of New Year's Eve, my family and I stumbled across Dose, a small cozy cafe that sits quietly above Gage Street day market. Despite the cafe looking suspiciously empty on a Sunday at lunch time, we decided to still give it a try; and we do not regret our decision. Their brunch menu was rather small, but offers a range wide enough to suit different tastes and cravings (e.g. pancake, quesadilla, roast chicken etc.).I had the salmon e

I had the salmon eggs benedict ($108), served with rocket salad on the side. The hash brown as a substitute for the usual English muffin was a pleasant surprise -- pan-fried to a golden colour, it wasn't greasy at all (perhaps neutralized by the acidity from the hollandaise), and its crunchy texture compliments well with the smoked salmon. The eggs were nicely done -- the runny yolk oozes out beautifully (although personally I would prefer the eggs more cooked), and there was no odd vinegary taste at all.

My daughter had the mushroom risotto ($128), which she was quite happy about. The risotto was cooked to al dente, and bursts with mushroom aroma (porcini, shiitake, and a third kind of mushroom which we forgot to mark down). And, perhaps reformulated to suit the taste of hongkongers, the consistency of the sauce base is a little different from what we're used to, being more soupy than creamy, yet thick enough to lightly drape over each grain. As a loyal mushroom risotto eater, it's a first that she hadn't complained about the risotto being too sickening halfway through the plate.

My husband had the beef fettuccine ($128), which was again, cooked in a lighter sauce, much like home-food; the beef was tender with no nasty bits of tendon, though, again a personal preference, it could've been seasoned just a little bit more.

To wrap up our meal, we shared a portion of pancakes ($78) between the three of us, and each ordered a flat white ($38). The pancakes were alright, nothing special but met the bar nonetheless: fluffy, thickness nicely controlled, served with butter, maple syrup and sliced berries. The flat white was good, a smoky nutty roast with feather-light milk foam, served in a cute oriental ceramic tea cup -- the presentation is cute and novelty, but impractical unless you don't mind your coffee turning lukewarm after ten few minutes.
Overall it was a great experience at Dose. Our servers were comfortably friendly and attentive; the greyish blue tones of the setting was relaxing, with soft acoustic cafe music playing in the background; and the toilet is clean, if that's important to you.
