Little Bao, good location , yummy food

I came here on their soft opening night. I Had high expectations and luckily I wasn't dissapointed either. The food was super cute, served on mini plates, there was alot of variety with dish choices and everything sounded unique and exciting on the menu and you could tell the chef definatley added her own spin on every dish. The entrees were really good, the clams was average but the Eggplant and Shiso Pork Tempura and Short-Rib Pan-Fried Dumpling was delicious! The food was super cute, served on mini plates, there was alot of variety with dish choices and everything sounded unique and exciting on the menu and you could tell the chef definatley added her own spin on every dish. 

The entrees were really good, the clams was average but the Eggplant and Shiso Pork Tempura and Short-Rib Pan-Fried Dumpling was delicious! I love eating at a place that serves unique food and makes me wanna come back just to eat the same dish again knowing other places dont have it. 

The Baos were a little under what I had expected, the fish one was good but the chicken one was a big average, and my friends thought the pork belly and pickles didnt go too well together. 

My favourite was the brussels, its hard to get brussels to taste delicious but Little bao nailed this dish it was sweet and full of flavour right into the core , and I think I ate about 2 plates on my own.

We all enjoyed the dessert bao and wish we had ordered 3 more. The bao was crispy on the outside and the combination of green tea icecream and condensed milk is so delicious and a perfect ending to a yummy meal!

Price wise i feel its a bit pricy for the portion size, but considering its Soho I guess the price is what you expect to be paying. 

The restaurant itself is super small and a little cramped so don't expect to be seated too comfortably. It's not a place for a big group of friends, its best to come as 2s, as you won't be able to chat with eachother.

More than just their baos!

"Exciting", "vibrant", "hip" -- these are some of the words I'd expect people would use to describe Little Bao. I'd say it's all these things, but more importantly, it's unique. And that's rare in HK nowadays, when so many restaurants are increasingly owned and managed by groups. Of course, groups also run specialty restaurants, but at least for me, I still feel these small-scale establisments are particularly special. Of course, groups also run specialty restaurants, but at least for me, I still feel these small-scale establisments are particularly special. Oh, and also, the food is pretty awesome. 

As the name suggests, Little Bao specialises in "baos" -- Chinese steamed buns, modified into burgers which sandwich various fusion-inspired fillings, including pork belly, fish tempura and chicken.

The buns were great, but personally, I enjoyed some of their other dishes more. These included the Orange Chicken which is basically pieces of fried running chicken covered with salty egg yolk, honey glaze and orange zest. The flavours of saltiness and sweetness are very well balanced, and the chicken is crispy but moist inside.

 Another favourite was the Short-Rib Pan Fried Dumplings, which are filled with slow-braised organic OBE beef short rib, and served on a bed of celeriac coleslaw. The dumplings are pan-fried till crisp on the outside and the beef filling is juicy and tender. The coleslaw also adds an extra layer of texture, adding crunch, and tones down some of the more intense flavours of the beef. I particularly liked the fact that the beef is organic - it's always nice to know we are putting quality ingredients into our bodies.

 For my mandatory vegetable intake, I also liked the Brussel Sprouts which are flavoured with fish sauce, caramel, chili and lime. Like the Orange Chicken, this was another dish which married the flavours of savoury and sweet very well.

 Finally, the one dessert on the menu (at least at my time of visiting) is a must try. The first time I visited, I shared this and (we both) quickly regretted it -- the second time, we had a whole one each. In short, it's a deep fried mini bao, with green tea ice cream sandwiched in between. This is then topped with condensed milk. The end result delivers a variety of sensations in regards to texture, temperature and flavours - all of which work remarkably well together to produce a crave-worthy item.

 Service at little bao is also friendly and efficient.

The one "downside" I suppose is how difficult it is to get seats. From my experience, it's best to arrive at 6pm (which is when they open) on weekends, if you want to make the first round. It might seem like a bit of a sacrifice having to line up and wait around -- but it's definitely one worth making.

    這家新開的店是我在instagram看到有別人去試, 其中他們的包讓我很想去吃我是比較喜歡吃像饅頭或台灣刈包的那種包點, 而看到這裡的包是以那種白色的包做的中文名字很特別, 叫"小包包", 營業時間是晚上6點到12點, 白天是不開的上星期五去吃, 人已經蠻多的, 因為店子只有18個座位而不受電話訂位登記好之後店員跟我說要等1-1.5小時, 本來是想要放棄的了但離開了20分鐘他就打來說有位, 可能是前面的人都去了別的地方, 所以就可以吃了先點些喝的, 我點了洛神花茶, 姐點了薑啤. 洛神花茶給人感覺很中式, 正正就是這邊想做的東西吧做的東西都是蠻中式的但感覺卻帶西式. 花茶味道很好不會太酸或太甜姐點的薑啤很好喝, 這品牌的薑啤原來很有名的, 薑味很夠, 可以喝薑啤的人可點這裡的配東西吃這枝是辣醬, 可加在包跟其他菜式, 微辣的味道不錯的前後點了兩款"bao", 這款是pork belly, 這裡做的包形式類似漢堡兩塊麵包裡面夾餡, 但就用了白麵包, 像平時吃饅頭的那一種有兩塊豬腩肉, 油香十足, 但吃起來不會覺得油膩喔, 豬腩肉用了慢燉的煮法去煮就像在吃滷肉, 醬油香帶點甜, 沒有死鹹的

     先點些喝的, 我點了洛神花茶, 姐點了薑啤. 洛神花茶給人感覺很中式, 正正就是這邊想做的東西吧
    做的東西都是蠻中式的但感覺卻帶西式. 花茶味道很好不會太酸或太甜
    姐點的薑啤很好喝, 這品牌的薑啤原來很有名的, 薑味很夠, 可以喝薑啤的人可點這裡的配東西吃

     前後點了兩款"bao", 這款是pork belly, 這裡做的包形式類似漢堡
    兩塊麵包裡面夾餡, 但就用了白麵包, 像平時吃饅頭的那一種
    有兩塊豬腩肉, 油香十足, 但吃起來不會覺得油膩喔, 豬腩肉用了慢燉的煮法去煮
    就像在吃滷肉, 醬油香帶點甜, 沒有死鹹的感覺, 味道其實做得好
    但就覺得肉質韌了一點, 處理的方法要再改善. 配菜的紅洋蔥很好吃的, 有大蔥跟紫蘇的味道
    配上海鮮醬跟茄汁, 還有芝麻醬, 味道加起來有點像台灣刈包. 只是肉的質感不太好, 不然這個也做得很不錯的

     相比起pork belly, 我更喜歡這裡的fish tempura bao, 因為質素綜合起來水準都比較高
    餐紙寫著魚是用上菜市場的新鮮貨, 再做天婦羅. 吃得出肉質很鮮很嫩, 雪藏貨很難會做到這樣的味道
    天婦羅一點都不會油, 脆身的面層加上嫩滑的魚肉, 很好吃!
    另外那些醃菜加了香茅跟茴香的味道, 酸中帶很香的香料味, 但香料的味道淡淡的, 一點都不會搶了其他食材的味道
    也喜歡配魚的梅子醬, 因為也是酸的, 這裡也是有他他醬, 但就比一般的他他醬味道上更有層次

    除了包, 他們還有"for sharing"的菜可點, 這款天婦羅配搭很特別喔
    包著茄子, 豬肉跟紫蘇葉. 不過味道就可以再更好一點, 豬肉的肉香蠻淡的
    而且豬肉的份量在比例上也比較少, 茄子放在底部, 吃得出茄子的味道
    紫蘇葉的香也能帶得出來. 天婦羅的皮夠薄, 也是不油. 點的梅子醬救了這款天婦羅
    點了才會好吃, 不然光吃的話就沒有甚麼太突出的味道

    我很喜歡吃brussel sprouts, 中文叫抱子甘藍. 不過就覺得brussel sprouts要用烤的才好吃
    這邊的是用烤的! 很有興趣就點了來吃. 烤得可以再久一點點, 焦香可以再更重一點喔
    不過用上魚露跟糖去烤, 味道很好. 還有上麵的炸乾蔥, 好吃. 在家也可以試試這樣做呢

    這道橙雞其實還蠻像港式的那種"黃金蝦", "黃金魷魚", 都用上鹹蛋黃來炒的
    不過他們就用來炒雞塊. 每塊雞都被炸成雞球, 炸層很好吃, 因為裹了蜜糖還有橙香
    橙加雞肉加上鹹蛋黃味道原來是搭的! 而且很夠熱, 讓我們吃不停口呢
    雞肉本身也不會乾, 這道都很美味呢, 沒有骨的雞球相信我男友應該會很愛吃

    看前面的兩篇食評都是特地來吃這道甜點, 他們的甜點就只有這一款, 但幾乎每個人都點了
    包被炸過, 加上裡面有煉乳, 就真的好像一般吃的炸饅頭
    中間夾著美味的綠茶雪糕, 非常非常好吃喔. 綠茶雪糕就不像抹茶的那種甘, 但也是很好吃
    吃到最後怎樣都要點這個來吃, 一個人絕對可以吃得了一個呢

    我蠻喜歡這家小包包, 我很怕吃甚麼fusion的東西, 但這裡的都做得好, 不是亂來的那種fusion
    不過位子很少, 又不接受電話預約的, 所以要吃的快早點去找位子吧
    服務很好, 我比較欣賞店裡的香港員工, 都很熱心的為我們介紹他們店的東西
