We made an advanced booking to try the famous roast chicken and booked a Sunday Brunch Session at $958 per person. It’s quite a walk up from Central to the restaurant at PMQ, you certainly develop an appetite by the time you get there.
Service is not good for what is supposed to be a Michelin Star Restaurant, the front desk staff gave me a table outside firstly when I had made a booking inside and some of the waiters didn’t know which table some of the food was going to.
The brunch consisted of appetizers for sharing as follows:
• Slightly toasted sourdough bread slice, Dumè Cesari valetta, burrata and black truffle - Firstly I don’t think the Sourdough was slightly toasted 🤔and second of all it was probably one of the hardest sourdoughs I’ve ever eaten and was cumbersome to chew through unless your a barbarian.
• Veal terrine, mustard, pickled vegetables - When served this dish the waitress served the plate at an angle with one of the pieces nearly slide of the plate. For the photo I pushed it back in 😠 There was nothing special for this dish, the veal terrine had a mild flavor and their was only 2 slices of it.
• Barbecue grilled mackerel filet, escabeche gel, horseradish and dill - This dish was quite good, the mackerel wasn’t fishy, it was sweet with chewy texture.
• Laurent Berrurier iodized flavour beetroot tartar, arugula sorbet - The beetroot tartar was cool, refreshing and earthy. The Arugula sorbet was great, bitter and peppery and gave the dish a good contrast and seasoning.
• 'Casting' peppercorn air dried duck breast - This had a nice cured ham flavor, slightly salty but too fatty and oily.
To be honest none of these sharing dishes were really of Michelin Star standard. The best dish here was the beetroot tartar and arugula sorbet.
The 2 mains we ordered we ordered the following:
• Angel hair pasta, Kristal caviar, black truffle, kombu - For this dish we had to add an extra $298, but given it is one of their signature dishes we really wanted to try it. When it arrived we were shocked by how small it was especially since we added $298. What was worst it was stone cold 🥶we assumed it was supposed to be like this, served cold pasta 😏 we could taste the salty caviar and the black truffle against the cold angel hair. Extremely disappointed with this dish.
• Smoked organic egg, potato, chorizo, buckwheat - This is another signature dish and actually lived up to its reputation. A foam was created form the egg white with a potato whip / sauce. It was seasoned well and refreshing.
Finally the brunch comes to with the famous Roasted Hong Kong yellow chicken, Niigata rice “en cocotte”, salad 🥗 . As there was 2 of us we got half a chicken, but it was brought whole for us to take photos. After photo taking the chicken is apparently reheated and then carved up for serving. This takes at least 15 minutes. I had the breast part where my partner had the thigh and the leg. The breast was moist and juicy and the skin was crispy, my partners thigh had one part not cooked close the bone 🤬, we didn’t bother to mention it has it was the last piece after eating the whole chicken. The chicken comes with a chicken skin marinated rice and salad. The chicken skin rice is so delicious it seems to be marinated in chicken oil and probably the best infused chicken rices I’ve ever had.
To end the brunch we were able to select 2 pastries from the ‘Louise Pastry Box’. We chose a raspberry tart and Hazel Nut cake. The presentation of both pastries were immaculate and were freshly made and not overly sweet, the raspberries were juicy and the hazel nut flavor was very strong which was great 👍. The desserts were accompanied by hot teas of our choice.
I don’t think I’d come back again, as it is over priced for what it is and the service is substandard. The best dish has got to be the roasted chicken and that rice, that alone is worth the visit, but everything else was disappointing and overrated.
