Scotch Broth -
It’s a little too thin but the aromatics from the celery especially was very strong. The bread was crispy on the outside edge. A lovely soup but could be more stew-like. ~ 7/10

Smoked Salmon with Onion & Capers on Oatcakes -

Haggis, Neeps and Tatties with Gravy -
Pouring some Whisky onto the Haggis, I just love eating it this way even though the gravy sauce has some of this infused already… The organs taste is never strong here but it is better than nothing else available. The swede mash was smooth and sweet, the potato mash was not over-powered by butter. Overall this was a lovable dish if it could have more organs taste. 8/10

In conclusion I prefer the Haggis and I just found out that they do Haggis spring rolls from the review below so I will try that on my next visit.

They offer a variety of finger foods, soups and salads, pasta and pizza, heavy mains and an all-day roast selection. I sampled their Spaghetti Bolognese, Buffalo Chicken Wings and Haggis Springrolls; which although weren't exceptional, weren't too bad either.

Aside from the usual offers of Carlsberg, Stella, Asahi, Tsing Tao and San Miguel, The Canny Man also offers a wide variety of German and Belgian beers, as well as English and Scottish ales. Last time I visited, I had Fuller's London Pride Ale. Refreshingly light and crisp, London Pride is perfect for those clammy summer evenings (which are thankfully coming to an end).

And if you're a whisky connoisseur, you'll definitely love this place with their over a hundred selection of whiskies.

Guests are privy to a game of pool and/or darts free of charge and football and rugby matches are often televised live as well. If the things that make you happy include whisky/beer and sports, then The Canny Man is definitely the place to be.

這天遊灣仔,來到華美粵海酒店地庫的精伶吧 The Canny Man估不到竟然有地道的蘇格蘭菜 Haggis 羊肉雜碎餡羊肚布丁,蘇格蘭傳統的 Haggis 是把羊的內臟打碎後放入羊胃裡扎合兩邊口然後焗熟,是Signature 的 Scottish Pub Food。不過這裡的 Haggis 是漢堡扒,未有忠於原著!Roast of the Day 也是羊肉一般的 Pub Food,不好也不壞,下次可以再試第二間!

這夜是潮州商會大局的日子,開席之前難得有點時間,便相約M小姐先喝兩杯。她在蘇格蘭生活過,如果帶她來到全港唯一一間蘇格蘭酒館,在粵海酒店的"CANNY MAN",又如何?還不是很多人,門外還是擺放一排排的蘇格蘭純芽威士忌,她素來喜愛喝源自Isly的純芽貨色,應該會找到其心水之選。最後,她只喝啤酒,因她不習慣空著肚喝威士忌,看過酒牌後,她說Angel Share的選擇不比這裡少,而且後者更有原桶Macallan,吸引力更大。既然來到蘇格蘭酒館,自然地來一杯Belhaven,已是第三次了,有點酸度,還有一陣果香,結構清爽,相比其他麥啤,也是易入口之級別。伴酒的小吃是雜豆,聊勝於無,旨在過一過口癮。兩位友人亦相繼到步,我們亦要放下鈔票,向西環出發了,下一次再來過,喝著啤酒打場Pool?

After a satisfying Christmas lunch last year, I came back for Haggis.

Haggis is a dish containing sheep's 'internal organs' (heart, liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally simmered in the animal's stomach.
Currently due to availability and convenience some are prepared in a casing rather than an actual stomach.

Haggis is a kind of sausage, or savoury pudding cooked in a casing of sheep's intestine, as many sausages are.

Most haggis are served with "neeps and tatties" (Scottish: swede, yellow turnip, boiled and mashed)

It was presented neatly, three scoops of swede, and a scoop of mashed potato in the centre with the Haggis sitting on top, and a side of rich gravy.

I was surprised how perfect it tasted, it did not have any off putting smell, and the Haggis was moist and the oats were soft, and the spices and everything all blended perfectly, the gravy enriched everything.
The swede tasted how it should, and everything complimented well together.

As for setting, it is truly an oasis in Wan Chai, a nice hidden spot, the carriage compartment seats are the best, it reminds me of the old trains at the Bluebell railway in Sussex.

I was wondering which restaurant would be my first Christmas lunch, the favourite time of the year because of gravy, stuffing, chipolata sausages and cranberry sauce.

It seemed that the Canny Man had a flyer first for Christmas lunch starting on the 6th December, followed by Carnegies.
Last year, I did not have the traditional xmas lunch here, so it was on my priority list to go.

The Christmas dinner at the Canny Man was actually more appealing because it was a four course dinner including haggis.

Anyway ordered the xmas lunch, the soup, salad and bread were the usual starters.

Then the main lunch came, it was perfect, it had brussel sprouts, carrots, roast potatoes, turkey, gammon ham, big slab of stuffing, chipolata sausage rolled in bacon and cranberry sauce.
Everything was piping hot and fantastic.

The turkey was so tender and juicy which was surprising, yet it still had the turkey meat texture and freshly cut from a whole turkey.

The diced roasted potatoes were also my favourite, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and the Gamman ham was good too.

The xmas lunch was followed by a banana royale, mince pies and a drink for $158 per person.

Apart from the xmas lunch, I was really tempted for the vegetarian version, as it had Portabello mushroom.

Ideally I wanted to have the xmas dinner instead of the lunch, because the entrees are a good and they have haggis too.

食物, 本來是來吃蘇格蘭特色食物, 可是我一看見有傳統的英國pub food, Gammon Steak. 我就覺得甚麼式都不要, 始終英格蘭野會啱味D, 同, 多了一份感情. 另外是南瓜點的Haggis, 同Lamb Stovies.
Haggis, 正宗的蘇格蘭特色, 一粒粒碎粒的東西, 有點像聖誕節食用的Stuffing. 不過, 這東西, 羶味不重. 基本上可以說是完全沒有. 聽南瓜介紹, 呢一味是以羊雜加燕麥去煮成. 口感非常之香, 非常之濃厚. 混了薯蓉, 蘿蔔蓉一起吃, 淋上少少gravy, 味道更加濃郁芳香.

Lamb Stovies, 看起來, 同愛爾蘭的Strewed Steak一樣, 似足我們本國的菜式. 味道一樣是非常濃郁. 羊肉味道重而不羶. 伴上薯仔片. 同一個濃濃的汁. 若有一碗白飯, 相信我可以食上兩碗.

Gammon Steak, 係英國, 食10鎊for 2既pub lunch時, 不吃 Fish & Chips, 不鋸大牛扒. 一定會點上一塊圓圓大大, 香味非常的火腿扒. 不過有些東西, 離鄉後未必能食返應有的味道. 正式的Gammon Steak. 是純火腿肉, 連皮帶點脂肪, 通常都有好香的蜜糖味. 最靚的, 會是正圓形的一大塊. 這一個Gammon Steak, 味道是香, 不過蜜味不重, 若要讓朋友感受一下甚麼是靚既Gammon Steak, 那我需要些時間係灣仔, Soho找找了.

酒館外的櫥牆,全部放上蘇格蘭人最自豪的純麥威士忌,單是此項目在酒館,有成過百款式選擇.由最平的$55一杯,到最貴的The Macallan三十年$400一杯.小弟一直都是喝紅牌,黑牌或芝華士,也是近年才開始飲純芽,由Glenfiddich 十八年作為平生第一支Single Malt,到上年在倫敦機場免稅店買了支Talisker 10 Year Old,如果在此喝一杯,盛惠$65.

是夜陳真相約晚飯,我提議來這裏試試.內裏也是很濃厚的英式酒館味道,牆身的紅格仔圖案,是蘇格蘭其中一種象徵.而且有Pool檯,可與友人,或不相識的酒客,打一場"友誼之波".想聽歌亦可在點唱機,入錢來揀歌.另外此酒館的主題是以欖球為主,可能蘇格蘭的足球水準,實在太過水皮吧.自1998年來,再沒有打進大型賽事決賽周,蘇超球會來來去去也是兩隊獨大...

其實在月前與女友來過,只是喝了一杯Belhaven,這晚來到,不喝威士忌,還是喝回Belhaven.此啤是在蘇格蘭釀製,是屬於麥啤一類,色澤較啖,味道酸而帶有果味,沒有Boddington的滑,但更爽.歡樂時光賣$43一杯.陳真依然擁抱手上的健力士,他說拉得也不錯.

說到蘇格蘭菜,大多人一定第一時間想到蘇格蘭三文魚.其實還有一道Haggis,是以羊雜.燕麥等剁碎成粒狀的傳統蘇格蘭菜式,此道名為A sample of McSween's Haggis,除Haggis之外,同碟有薯茸,蘿蔔茸.這個Haggis,味道很濃,但沒有騷味.入口感覺碎而鬆散,伴以清甜的蘿蔔茸,和薯茸一起吃,再加些Gravy,雖然說肉汁內混合了威士忌,但不覺得有酒香.不過肉汁味道也很濃.是次Haggis初體驗,也算不錯.

另一道蘇格蘭味道,是Lamb Stovies 燴羊肉,伴燕麥餅吃.外表極似我們的黑椒牛柳絲,果然味道亦有雷同之處,但羊肉味道不強,而且肉質頗齦.碟上的薯仔份量多,單是吃薯仔已夠飽.

陳真點了客Gammon steak,他在英倫中北部生活多年,少不免有一點思鄉之情,他說當年在英國酒館,經常吃燒豬腿肉.是地道的pub food,回流之後便少吃了而此Gammon steak,在一些吃盡珍餿百味的港人眼中,只是一塊火腿扒而已.說回面前的Gammon steak,除豬腿扒之外,面頭更有一隻太陽蛋,伴碟的還有薯條,沙律菜.聽他解釋如果是靚的Gammon steak,是醃得很香,這塊Gammon steak,在他眼中並不算特別好,我覺得此腿扒肉質軟稔,也有一陣煙香味.將太陽蛋流出來的蛋黃同吃,甘香美味.小弟在英國旅行到酒館,不是吃炸魚薯條,全天候早餐,便是steak pie之類,下次再到英國時候,也要一試.

或許香港人覺得英倫三島菜式,不及意,法,日,中國菜精彩,但我在之前的食評都說過,每一個國家,地方的菜式,也有其可取之處.視乎你會不會去試,懂不懂去欣賞.你肯試,個人視野又再擴闊一點.
雖然來過此酒館兩次,兩次也很少酒客,始終香港曾是英國殖民地,到今天還有很多英國人在居住,如果全港所有Scottish也識得來的話,那就不得了.

However I don't think these instructions will get you anywhere! Burrowed deep beneath the Chinese run Wharney Guang Dong Hotel one oddly finds a hidden Scottish Bar atypical of its genre. Its the brainchild of a Scottish gent, who is so sanguine of success and his urban hideout's ability to ensnare the crowd from the above ground competitors - it completely dispenses with a prominent shop front on the Wanchai strip. Nevertheless, going by a roomful of UK expats and Scottish Bankers crowded around here instilling a sense of fervent home support, this is precisely the oasis it advertised itself to be on the front door's banner...

Discovered during a spontaneous search for a genuine Scottish experience in HK when feeling deprived, only a meagre two returns came up on the screen. One of these turned out to be a false lead in Central leaving no trails of previous existence, so that makes here the sole Scottish bar remaining. The glass cabinet beside the entrance downstairs does not shy away from its intent – its jam packed with a lavish range of Scotch Whiskies originating from Speyside all the way down to Islay, Campbeltown and the Lowland's, and still this display range is by no means exhaustive. The relevationary whisky tour continues inside as the inventory grows to somewhere upwards of 180 types, with at least 130 specialty whiskies which can be ordered individually as drams, historically considered elixir potions containing magical abilities to cure ailments! Other rare finds to complete the authentic Scottish experience either include bottled or rotating Scottish Ales on tap, Irn Bru drinks or even bottles of highly regarded Scottish highland spring water sourced all the way from the Vale of Strathmore.

A compelling food menu reminds of those regularly found in gastro pubs around the UK, some of the peasanty stews and pie dishes sharing slight resemblance to Irish food, but the tone setting dish here is their starter of a bastardised, modern version Haggis, made of liver, tripes, offals and onions but sans the sheep stomach for cooking it in, as per original recipe – nevertheless douse this with a shot of whisky before consuming and you're in heaven, but the fried version is still even better. Other Stovies and Oatcake, Steak & Ale Pies and an Irish Breakfast complete with Black pudding, Square Sausage and many items are rich in flavours yet elegant. Finish off the meal sweetly with shortbread and vanilla ice cream with top drizzled caramel sauce. With three private booths available for reservation on one side of the room what can be more satisfying than squeezing four abreast into one, snuggle up to your best mates and partner, down some drams of whisky and singing late into the night?

3) 烤肉(雞).

我跟同事也點了雞, 她要了湯, 我要了沙律.
其實也是挺surprise沙律看起來很"四正", 是海撤沙律的菜底加三隻蝦及好幾片牛油果. 足料, 而且更加了Olive Oil, 吃起來很香, 合口胃!


主菜的烤春雞實在嚇了一跳. 可能未去過bar吃lunch. 份量跟價錢成正比有餘!

冷天的好朋友! )
雞整體也做得不錯, 配菜也很足料. 是薯蓉加一份steam vegi.
兩者味道也不錯, 不會"hea"做...

最後點了熱咖啡, 水準不過失. 不會酸囉.

整個感覺也是非常不錯的, 雖然是酒吧.
可能還未有太多人聞說這裡的lunch set, 所以找位子客易...

This Pub/restaurant which I dined in \March is finally listed.At the time, it was spring, not too cold an not too hot. This Pub/restaurant which I dined in \March is finally listed.

At the time, it was spring, not too cold an not too hot. I walked past and saw a menu for roast pork, so I went it to try it.
It is located in the Warney Guangdong hotel, at the lower ground floor, almost like a secluded wine cellar.
But when you get down there, it is a very Irish style pub, and there are three comfy more private compartments on the side. So I sat there.

Ordered the Roast pork, and All day scottish breakfast which had Square sliced sausage, breakfast sausage, potato scone, mushrooms, tomato, bacon, eggs, black pudding, haggis balls, sautéed onion potato, baked beans and toast.

In general the breakfast was ok, a bit greasy, cos I think the oil wasnt that fresh. The roast pork was a big dish too, which apple sauce and the usual vegs.
