I went to Pastis on the beckoning of a good friend of mine who wanted to meet up before she had to go back to working as a school teacher again. I initially declined as I had work and that I would only be able to have lunch some place that was close by. I went to Pastis on the beckoning of a good friend of mine who wanted to meet up before she had to go back to working as a school teacher again. I initially declined as I had work and that I would only be able to have lunch some place that was close by. Luckily, another friend of mine who was also joining us recommended Pastis as it was closer to both our working locations.

I was the last one to arrive and going up the long escalator had left me especially hungry, so it was a good thing my friend helped take my order for me through the phone while I was on the way. There weren't too many people there at the time and it didn't take long before I was served the first of the lunch course I ordered: Roasted Beetroot Soup with Creme Fraiche.

I won't pretend to know what was in that soup exactly, but it was creamy and rather filling  enough even without the bread that was also served alongside the meals.

Shortly after I had finished the soup, I was served the main course I had ordered: Roasted Duck Breast, Green Beans and Sauteed Potatoes with Orange Sauce.

Now, I have no idea what exactly they put in that orange sauce but it was simply divine. It went well with the medium-rare roasted duck meat it was paired off with and was altogether a pleasant surprise to the palette in contrast to the savoury soup I was first served with. The memory alone is simply mouthwatering.

All in all, even though I decided not to take either of the two options of coffee or dessert as a third course, everything else was proportioned well enough to satisfy my hunger and accomplished more so in impressing me. It saddens me somewhat to know that Pastis changes their lunch menu every week, but if the other menus are anything like the one I had that day, I wouldn't hesitate going back for another meal.

沒想到一星期之內竟吃了兩碗蘑菇湯。在le Fluer 吃的時侯已經覺得那碗蘑菇湯水準很不賴,但Pastis的蘑菇湯要好飲很多! 除了了味道更鮮菇味更重質地更杰之外,那個熱度呀是有點燙口,這才是喝湯的精髓所在嘛。

我是第一次覺得此物真的很好食。以往吃的鴨胸大概都是有後製過,味道和雞肉腸都有點似,肉質硬硬的,如同嚼蠟。這碟呢,鴨胸肉呈淡粉紅色,肉質非常柔軟;皮有點脆脆的,一點肥脂都沒有,不可能不把它吃掉! 一份鴨胸其實份量很大,應該都有接近10片吧。醬汁的橙味只是隱隱約約的,吃不出薑味,但淡淡酸mei mei 的味道好滋味! 配菜也很精彩。烤薯甜甜的加香草調味,當然好吃。那豆呢,大部份是焯了就上碟,顏色翠綠而口感較脆;有三份一份顏色帶點微黃,吃下去有點酸味,是稍微漬醃過吧。都很好吃呢。清碟了,真的好飽啊!

友人的海鱸魚Pan Fried Seabass Fillet w/ Mash Green Pea & Confit Tomato 也非常精彩。外出吃魚一怕不新鮮二怕over-cooked, 煎得好的魚其實也幾難求。試了一口海鱸魚,肉質實淨,非常新鮮,而且魚肉依然夠滑,無得彈。Mash green pea 青豆口味重可能未必人人喜愛,但的確是壓得幼滑,也比薯蓉來得light 一點。

放棄飲品,來個是日甜品vanilla panna cotta with cherries。雲尼拿味很濃,奶味很香,也很甜(有點太甜了) ! 雖然很滑,但質地很實噢不太像平時吃的軟滑panna cotta。最後吃剩了一點真不好意思…

友人的飲品也很好的。特別是那個ice lemon tea,店家不是只放幾片檸檬給你,而是把大量檸檬汁揸出來,和茶放入shaker 混好才奉客! 朋友說就真好酸啊,相信會很消膩啦。

題外話/補充資料: = # = # = # = # = # = # = 雖然我一早訂了位,但只遲到了七分鐘,枱子就給了別人了! 幸好剛好有客人快要離開才解決問題… 小店只有一名外籍waiter, 雖然忙得團團轉的,但臉上一直有個腼瞋的笑容,幾可愛的。但他老是叫我們sit down & relax。嗯,其實我也想relax 啊只是午餐時間那麼少… 最後也不算吃得很趕,而且食物真的太好吃了,所以印象還是很好的。期待下次再來這法式小店。

Wynham Street is a connector at one end tapping with the heart of Central, as it runs up the slope, the other end merge with the Hollywood Road. There are quite a number of restaurants along the street. At day time, the eateries are filled with executives working around the area for lunch. As a French bistro, Pastis serves simple yet up to standard food. Charging at $128 for a 3-course meal is reasonable at today’s standard.

The sea bass was a bit dry than expected, however, the dish was nicely prepared with cream sauce mixed with chopped chives on top and smashed pumpkin as base.

From the crispiness and appearance of the skin, the chef should have prepared the duck skin as the Chinese BBQ chefs did by piercing the skin of the duck breast with tiny needles so that the fat would be released when pan fried and thus enhanced the crispiness. The meat beneath was a beautiful pink and moist.

e) Chocolate Mousse (Dessert) – 8/10

The third course was a choice of dessert or coffee. This chocolate mousse was rich in dark chocolate and the texture was gooey.

Located amongst an array of bars and clubs on Wyndham street is one of my favourite French bistros in Hong Kong, Pastis Bistro Francais. Sitting on a slightly uncomfortable stool and sipping a café au lait, sometimes I simply forget that I am still in Hong Kong. Every time I visit Pastis for a meal, at least a third to half of its clients are Frenchmen. Perhaps the only thing that is not so French about the place is the owner, who is way more friendly and welcoming than his counterparts in Paris

Bistro by day and bar by night, I believe most of you might remember Pastis as a place that is completely swamped by bar-goers in the weekend evenings. Pastis offers a great-value set lunch which is priced at $98 for 2 courses and $115 for 3 courses. However, perhaps due to budgetary constraints, the ingredients used for the set lunch menu were much less refined than those used for its à la carte dishes. Therefore, despite the price difference, I would still recommend that you order from their à la carte menu.

(1) For appetiser, I had this Roasted Chicken Breast with Avocado & Grapefruit Salad (set lunch). While the portion was not robust with only a few slices of meat, the chicken breast was roasted beautifully and was soft and tender. The grapefruit was refreshingly sweet and not bitter at all, and the avocado added a touch of creaminess to the salad.

(2) Then, I had this Roasted Duck Breast with Ginger, Orange Sauce (set lunch) for my main course. The duck breast had an appealingly firm texture, but was otherwise bland in taste. The ginger and orange sauce was delightfully sweet, but the ginger taste did not stand out, and the accompanying vegetables were a bit overcooked.

(3) Since I am always in the mood for tartares, I love ordering this Traditional Steak Tartare served with Green Salad ($108, 90g) from the à la carte menu, as it is truly fantastic! The steak tartare was impressively fresh and the seasoning was magnificent, with a combination of tastes from the capers, shallots, garlic, egg yolk and Dijon mustard - Pastis always has this spot-on!

(4) Another accomplished item on the à la carte menu is the Pork Sausages served with Mashed Potato & French Lentils ($145), which never fails to impress us. The pork sausages had marvellous flavours and a fantastic crunch; the texture of the lentils were just right and they also absorbed all the wonderful flavours from the sausages.

(5) The dessert for the set lunch was an adorable Crème Caramel, which was amazingly smooth and sticky but not cloying. It had the perfect amount of sweetness and I was really thrilled to see the fresh vanilla beans at the bottom of the crème caramel. The syrup was watery but aromatic, and the berries were nice and sweet.

(6) Our meal cheerfully ended with this café au lait with a cute smiley face, which not only looked pretty but tasted good too!

We decided to go to this restaurant and did not book it. Luckily we got a table. Food: (1) Traditional Fish Soup - tasty and will be better if it is slightly thicker.(2) Escargots - butter and pesto sauce very yummy(3) Steak tartar - Ok but the french fries very crunchy(4) Onion tart - the taste of onion, anchovy and olives mixed very well(5) Apple tart - Good but need more cream.Overall service is very good and the manager came a few times and asked about the food.

Goose Mousse --- heavy goose taset, very gd, l like it!
Beef Tartar --- its fresh, but the taste was light, not my expectation, but still ok!
Cheese Platter --- it was really gd, the cheese was special compare another restaurant l tried before, the waiter said the cheese was from france, not italy,

Red & White --- ok la, not from Brodeaux, so hard to say gd or not.....

anyway, worth to try!!!

Really disappointing...service ok but owner is so pretentious and obnoxious. The food is ok, but nothing enough to act like a big shot. Humbleness will not kill them ! If you want to be surrender by "wanabee" gweilos, so this is the place !

法國有很多小餐廳, 氣氛cozy, home cooking, 水準通常都不錯。在香港的法國餐廳, 大部份都好extravagant, 細細間做bistro的不多。星期日放假, 一班朋友約好去食brunch, 試新餐廳, Pastis Bistro, 得十幾個位。餐牌選擇不多, 頭盤及小吃比較有趣, Main Courses都係sausages, steak, john dory, not very interesting。我們吃了:Goat Cheese salad, Salad用的是很普通的mixed salad, 加四件goat cheese toast, not exciting。Onion and anchovy tart, 有點似pizza, 上面放煮熟的洋蔥及anchovy, 味道比較特別, 但太咸, tart base 還可以,。mixed cold cut, grilled sandwiches, Cold cut is cold cut, ok。Sandwiches, ok。French fries ok, Wine的selection不太多, 我們叫了一支char

mixed cold cut, grilled sandwiches, Cold cut is cold cut, ok。Sandwiches, ok。French fries ok, Wine的selection不太多, 我們叫了一支chardonnay, 幾好, 四百多元一支, 價錢很合理。

埋單食物連酒連drink每人HK$450, 在中環的一個午餐, 不算貴, 叫 bistro, 可惜無法國小餐廳的感覺。

嚟到先啤一啤, Kronenbourg draught 夠凍夠清爽.

麵包好香麵粉味.

Boeuf Bourguignon: 肉軟腍入味, lumpy 薯蓉香, 汁刺激.

Saucisses de Toulouse: 脆, 多汁, herbs 味香.

Crème brûlée: 比 Paul Lafayet 的有過之而無不及.

吃過麵包後,侍者很快就奉上前菜 — 魷魚青瓜沙律。沙律菜爽脆新鮮,店方又放了許多橄欖油和檸檬汁,令平淡的蔬菜,添了清新香氣,也令吃時質感更順滑。然而我最欣賞的是那些切成圈狀的魷魚筒。它的質感軟綿中帶點彈性,讓牙齒一咬即斷,味道方面令人嘗到海鮮的清甜。整體上,魷魚筒和沙律菜是很好的搭擋,如果這道沙律,可以免費再添的話就好了!

曾經聽一位資深食友說過,煎三文魚是一道很難拿捏得好的菜式,每次吃這道菜時都不無失望。本身不愛吃Carbonara,就只好點這道煎三文魚配芥末汁了。想不到Pastis的煎三文魚卻做得不錯,尤其是那層甘香奇脆的魚皮,魚肉雖然沒有慢煮般的幼滑,但卻沒有煎得又老又粗糙。這道菜的配菜也可口好吃,香味十足的自家製軟滑薯蓉,有濃香菇菌加添惹味感。清甜的大塊紅蘿蔔和青豆,正好平衡一下薯蓉的飽膩。這道菜給我很有家庭菜的親切感,簡單好味之餘,又能兼顧食物營養和飽足感。

最後我選了以班戟甜品,為這頓滿足的午餐作結。兩塊薄薄的班戟,因為份量不多,所以容易令人產生再添的慾求。這道甜品的妙處,在於那淋在班戟之上的蜜糖,充滿鮮花和檸檬的香氣。另外,那小撮烹煮過切成絲狀的檸檬皮,簡直是神來之筆,令鮮花和檸檬的複合香味,在口腔內延長餘韻。

吃得滋味之餘,侍者(可能是老闆)又關切客人對菜式的意見,加上以這個價錢,就能吃到有質素的家庭式法國菜,當然值得推介。

同法國朋友去玩,為左應景,就食下法國菜,但大部分法國菜都好貴,呢間bistro都算平,原來來自馬賽的朋友都知道呢間野,仲話佢個名係法國南部一種酒,係玩沙地滾球個陣飲既,又學到野了。我地叫左一個鴨胸沙律同一個魚。個魚都幾滑,有香草味,唔錯,個鴨胸沙律都幾清新。除左野食之外,我地仲叫左杯pastis。佢其實係茴香酒,有成40度,不過梗係溝好多水啦,唔係飲到暈低。佢的味道太勁了,有d飲唔慣,都係飲番紅白酒啤酒cocktail好d。呢間野舖仔細細,都幾多客,大部分都係法國人,連waiter都係講法文,真係好似去左法國咁。

The food was simple, more like a visit to a foodie friend that feels like whipping up a meal for you or the time when one watched those cooking show too much one was aspired to cook for himself and the group. Mind you the food was neither bad nor outstanding but it’s just OK and right. This simplicity also covered its wine offering which did its job well as a good background to the whole experience and not something one will talk about after the meal ended.

I like the crispness of the toast baguette on the French onion soup but the soup itself was not tasty enough. Also, I would prefer a bit more liquid than the way it was served though overall the soup was decent. French fries were OK though I’m not a French fries fan.

Goat cheese salad with walnut and bacon was a very interesting dish for me and this seemed to be a simple enough dish one can do at home. The smell of the melted goat cheese was quite strong and was very hard on me at the beginning. After adjusting myself to the smell, the rich and creaminess of the cheese worked very well with bacon on a crispy baguette. I couldn’t remember sensing any taste of walnut in this dish until these days. The dressing of the accompanied salad was on an oily side, typical of salad dressing in Hong Kong where any hint of sourness in the food was aggressive tamed. Nevertheless, the whole dish was quite balanced but I wouldn’t ask for it on my next visit.

Grilled ham and cheese sandwich was much better than I expected. While the bread was quite thin and the look was more or less bone dried, the choice of cheese and the relatively moist ham helped balanced it out surprisingly well. The accompanied salad was the same as that of the goat cheese dish but provided a good deviation from the richness of the sandwich itself. Nice if you like this kind of dish.

The much talkabout beef bourguignon was a no surprise here, rich and beefy taste as meat cooked in red wine should be. The dish was good but nothing's outstanding; I wouldn't ask for this dish again next time. The good cookbook should let you reach the similar kinda dish like this one but you could save all the trouble and time toiling in the kitchen by just dropping at this place unless, of course, you really love to cook.

I think the fish of the day with roasted potato and seasonal vegetable was probably the most difficult to try one’s hand at home. Everything was cooked right and, again, nothing is really special. Just a decent dish to have and forget.

Right after I left the restaurant, I had a feeling of having food in a very decent/high class 茶餐廳. I was actually looking forward to trying its set lunch but the restaurant did not offer it on Saturday. Nevertheless, I like the restaurant overall and will be back again for more in the future not on its food offering but on its combination as a whole. To me, food seemed to be secondary here, particularly taking $$$ prices into account.

So a few friends and I decided it was time for a get together and one of my friends picked Pastis. Personally, I am not a big 'french food' type of guy (didn't know it was a bistro) but with the positive reviews on Openrice I decided it was worth a go. Environment - I quite like it at Pastis. The place is cozy (probably about 10 tables or so) and I think the decor has character. Seating was a little on the tight side but it's not a major problem. Service - Overall the service was pretty good. Food came promptly and the waitress was friendly. A minor gripe I had was there was a bit of pressure from the manager for us to finish since they had other people waiting. In his defense we did get there a little late and he's just trying to run a business I guess.

I kept it pretty simple tonight since I've been running a lot lately and careful with the food I eat.

Beef Bourguignon (basically a French-style beef stew) - This jumped out at me since I was looking for something quite hearty. The beef itself was very tender and flavorful. Loving the fact that the pieces of beef were quite generous in size. Sauce was also very tasty. The beef was sitting on a bed of stewed carrots and potatoes. Carrots were slightly soft and sweet. I'm digging how they left the skin on the potatoes. Definitely gives it a more rustic feeling and there is a little more bite in regards to the texture. Nice.

With all that said...portion size was a little small for a $150 beef stew. If you are a guy you probably need an appetizer or another entree to be full.

Note: If you are vegetarian...this is probably not the restaurant for you. There are no vegetarian entrees and I doubt most vegetarians would be full with a salad and soup.

Overall a pretty good meal. I will be back again.
