Nobody knew what will be served walking in Akrame. The menu fails to give away anything except the price differences among the 4 ($888 + $468 with 4 glasses of wine pairing), 6 ($1098 + $668 with 6 glasses of wine pairing) and 8-course ($1398 + 798 for 8 glasses of wine pairing) tasting menus. Servers are not of much help either, the only thing they'd say to you when asked is the chef wishes to maintain a surprise menu and that the courses will be mostly seafood with a choice of 2 meat options f
We had the 6-course tasting menu and one of us chose to have wine pairings, expected to be blown away... There were some dishes that were carefully plated but we failed to find any particular dish that was impressive or to our liking enough to make us wish to encore the restaurant. In fact when the server asked us when we were paying the bill which was the particular one dish that we liked most, we were speechless because we couldn't name any - it was THAT flat.
For a restaurant which puts much emphasis on seafood, we don't think they had executed the seafood well enough to deliver any taste of freshness that you would expect of the delicate meat. On the contrary, we felt the culinary execution totally buried any freshness of the seafood, if there was indeed any. All in all we found all the seafood courses tasted very bland - the clams tasted like cheap clams from local fish markets; and we were surprised that Pollock was served, the fish as we understand is often a cheap substitute of Cod.
The meat dish which was slow cooked French chicken that we picked, further sabotaged our dining experience. The chicken was too pink to feel right for Asians' palates that we had to ask for it to be redone. On top of that there was little plating effort made with only a bit of leg meat and a bigger piece of breast meat plainly presented on a light gravy.
As for the setting, the place was barely decorated with the basics. Not a lot value added to the dining experience.
Servicewise, in view of the 'surprise' blind menu, the servers failed to add value by explaining clearly enough what each dish was about. They would verbally introduce the dishes and ingredients as they put the dishes on the table but that didn't come to much rescue as we often had to ask them to repeat to fully comprehend what they had just said to us, and even so, they failed to offer any more help if you would drill further. On several counts, they even just placed the dishes in front of us without any introduction! And if Mr. Benallal likes the tricky idea of a blind menu so much, surely more effort on staff training is in need.
In inclusion, I don't think the meal was acceptable as an epicurean repast.
