Fukuoka is famous for three things, beautiful girls, ramen and mentaiko. Tararanya brought at least one of those regional specialties to Hong Kong. It's a mentaiko-themed restaurant. We came here upon a Japanese friend's introduction. This is their first branch in Hong Kong.
The whole place was bright and clean. It felt more like a cafe than a restaurant. It's a bit too bright for me so we choose the darkest corner at the end of the shop.
Menu:
Being a mentaiko specialist, you'd expect them to have plenty of selections based on mentaiko. Indeed, the amount of available dishes did not disappoint.
Mentaiko: Half-half : half original (raw) mentaiko and half grilled. Both were very fresh and had very pungent umami. My wife thought that the aburi (grilled) version was more delicious. Some like to eat it with lemon as well.
Spicy tuna salad with advocado:
I forgot to take a photo of this.
Whenever you see the description "spicy" tuna salad, it usually means "salty" instead of having anything to do with spiciness. It's the same character in Japanese. This is similar to a ceviche with advocado.
If I remember correctly, the portion was quite petite. At $93, it was rather pricey.

Mentaiko with rice: Another typical way of enjoying mentaiko. The quality of the Japanese pearl rice was good and mixed very well with the mentaiko. It doesn't look like a lot of mentaiko but it's actually sufficient as the taske of mentaiko can be quite strong.
Karaage (Fried Chicken): The fried chicken was a bit dry. The batter of the chicken tasted just like the original KFC chicken.
Vegetable stick ($58): Really, it's just assorted vegetable sticks such as carrots, asparagus, baby sweet corn and other vegetables. Surprisingly, this is not uncommon in izakayas. I believe the vegetables should have been imported from Japan. Very fresh, sweet and crunchy. At least equal to, if not better than, those served at Vegi.
Drinks: I've ordered two glasses of red wine. One from Italy and another one from Australia. As you could see, at $78 per glass, the amount of red wine per glass was ridiculous - probably less than 100 ml per "glass". They might as well pour it in a sake cup. I was quite pissed off by the red wine so I ordered a bottle of sochu instead ($340). This was the first time that I had sesame sochu. It had a strong sesame aroma. Not bad at all. It's from Fukuoka, Kurume.
Dashi maki:
This was excellent. Smooth egg roll mixed with fish stock, spring onions and filled with raw mentaigo. The timing was perfect as the egg roll still had a lot of egg sauce within. This seems to be at least on par with "The Mon", which does very good egg rolls. Highly recommended.
Chikuwa: Fried fish meat patties also filled with mentaigo and seaweed. This was slightly overcooked so the batter was harder than what I usually have. Nevertheless, still pretty good on the whole.
Miso pork:
Again, I forgot to take a photo of this. This was not as succulent as I had expected it to be but no complaints. Good with sochu.
Tararan Bowl: This seems to be their signature dish. You could choose 1/2 size as well. This was excellent. It's a big bowl of Japanese rice topped with nori, chopped egg slices, mentaiko, salmon and diced bamboo shoots.
The quality of all the ingredients was very good.
The way you eat this Tararan bowl is similar to the signature Nagoya dish "Hitsumabushi", namely, (1) Eat the whole thing without adding anything; (2) Then add the sesame, black sesame, nori, spring onions and oba provided; (3) Finally, add the dashi (fish stock) and turn it into an Ochatsuke. Highly recommended.
Conclusion:
The bill came down to about $1,680 for three persons.
My main quibble was that the drinks (other than the bottle of sochu) were pricey. Other than that, the food was good, the service was friendly and the place was comfortable. Not to be missed by mentaigo fans.
題外話/補充資料:
其後試過午市來進餐。午市套餐約$9X-$12X。份量充足。午市暫時完全不用排隊。很適合靜靜地輕鬆進餐。
I came here for lunch afterwards. The place was almost empty. Set lunch ranged between $90-$120. Definitely recommended for those who'd like to have a quiet lunch in CWB.
