The buffet at Basmatiexceeded my expectations. Priced at $99, including taxes, it was a real steal.Located in the heart of Sheung Wan on Connaught road, the restaurant seemed tobe very popular choice with the tourist groups. The restaurant has a bigdining hall and a relaxed atmosphere. Located in the heart of Sheung Wan on Connaught road, the restaurant seemed to

The restaurant has a big
dining hall and a relaxed atmosphere. It looked very cozy, clean and bustling. Apart
from the buffet, there is an extensive variety in the menu for wider section.
There were 22 dishes in
the buffet. The menu changes every day. They have 4 starters- 2 veg, 2 non veg.
In the mains they have 4 veg dishes and 2 non-veg-chicken, fish, mutton, and
beef (served mainly on Fridays) on rotation basis. Two rice dishes- biryani/
green pea pulao and plain rice, are served daily. Hot naans, straight from the
clay oven, are served on the table. Naan could have been softer & flaky. For desserts, they have at least two
desserts and a fruit platter every day.
Most of the dishes were
yummy and flavourful.
We started with Mango Lassi, which was quite delicious.
It comes in a huge glass and goes really well with the appetizers- Masala Papad,
Papri Chat and PapadamsPapri Chat (an Indian salad of chickpeas, potato,
tomato, onion, and chips mixed with sauce) was crunchy and very flavourful with
sweet, sour and spicy flavours mingling together to create a great dish.
Some of the dishes I’d
highly recommend are sizzling Paneer Tikka, Palak Paneer, King Prawn Masala, Cheese
Naan, Garlic butter Naan, Chicken Tikka, Stir-fry vegetables (Chinese Style)
and Fish Curry.
The Palak Panner and
Paneer Tikka Masala were cooked to perfection. The rich green colour of
spinach was retained and the taste was mild yet delicious. Paneer Tikka Masala
tasted out-of-the-world with paneer (cottage cheese) being marinated for 3/4
hours in an orange spice yogurt sauce and cooked in another thick creamy
sauce, absolutely restaurant style. They were served in very traditional dishes
that gave a very authentic look.
The butter Naan and
garlic Naan were fresh, soft, layered with crisp crust- they simply looked
& tasted gorgeous.
Dessert was Rasmalai -very
soft, professionally prepared cottage cheese dumpling soaked in rich, creamy
thickened milk. Garnishing with cherry gave it a royal look.
Verdict- The wait staff is courteous and
friendly! The owner was personally supervising every minute detail. The food
was well prepared, properly presented and, very delicious. Overall, it is a
fantastic restaurant.
