[ Crystal Jade La Mian and XLB | 馬鞍山 ]I was craving some Shanghai food so came to this well-established franchise in HK as they specialise in hand-pulled noodles. We came at 12pm on a Sunday and there were a few empty seats, but once it reached 1 o’clock, every table was occupied. They are doing an HSBC promotion lunch set for Friday, Saturaday, and Sunday but they are either for 2 people or 6. I was craving some Shanghai food so came to this well-established franchise in HK as they specialise in hand-pulled noodles. We came at 12pm on a Sunday and there were a few empty seats, but once it reached 1 o’clock, every table was occupied.


They are doing an HSBC promotion lunch set for Friday, Saturaday, and Sunday but they are either for 2 people or 6. We opted for the two-person menu and added some dishes as we were a party of 3.

HSBC lunch set for 2 $378


This set comes with the choice of three starters, one dim sum, two mains, and two drinks. The appetisers were served on a small platter and we chose these three out of four options.


四喜烤麩


The braised wheat gluten is soft and fluffy but I prefer the one at Paradise Dynasty which is chewier and has a better mouth-feel, this one easily melts and disintegrates in your mouth which is not what gluten is supposed to do. The sauce is great though and not as intense/sweet. The portion is expected as it is a small platter but I would have preferred more edamame and fungus.


雞絲粉皮


Chicken shreds given very stingily but the noodles are chewy and soft and great with the savoury sesame sauce, only wished there were more though.


陳醋西芹拌黑木耳


My favourite appetiser today! The vinegar is sharp but slightly sweet and very 開胃. The fungus is crunchy, refreshing and very well-handled. This was also the most generously given.


上海小籠包 (4pcs)


For our dim sum selection, of course, we had to get their XLB. Juicy and meaty with a thin wrapper, this is their speciality so how can it be bad? Only wished they gave us ginger and vinegar without having to ask for it.


As for the mains, there is a choice of 6 and we could choose two.


橙香蝦球


I was very sceptical about these prawn balls in orange sauce at first but they are actually very delicious. The prawns are very plump and big with a very thin but crunchy batter so you aren’t getting ripped off with 90% batter. The taste of prawn is not masked by the orange sauce so you can taste its freshness. As for the sauce, it has a very strong orange flavour and reminds me of sweet and sour sauce but not artificial at all. The additional peppers also add a nice crunch and pungency.


京蔥爆牛肉


The other main chosen was this ‘explosive’ beef and leek stir-fry which is full of flavour and the beef is very tender. The sauce is also very addicting and would have been great with rice.


The portion for both of the mains was very generous.

蔥油乾撈拉麵 $55


We also added this bowl of noodles as I was craving some noodles and it came with a chicken soup. Their version of scallion oil noodles have a stronger scallion flavour than Paradise Dynasty as the latter uses lard and CJ does not. They both look the same as they don’t add a lot of soy sauce but I think it would have made it better. The scallions on top would have been better is they were crispy but still added a nice textural contrast. I really enjoyed their hand-pulled noodles that is springy, tender, and soft but would have liked it to bit chewier.


As for the chicken broth, I’m still unsure why they serve it like this (same for Paradise Dynasty) but it’s comforting and warm but does taste of chicken powder.


The portion is nice for sharing among other dishes or for 1 person to eat as is.

金銀蛋浸時菜 $86


We also added this vegetable dish and it may seem expensive but the portion is very generous. The seasonal vegetable is spinach and I loved eating it with the salty egg and the sulphurous century egg. A very well-executed dish and not stingy on the salted egg too.

💬 Overall, nice service (tea is $10 per person fyi) with delicious and reliable Shanghai food. I also became their member today so will definitely be back. The speed of service is also very nicely controlled as the mains came together but we had time to eat a few bites of one before the other came.
