The intention was to lunch at the Assaggio Trattoria which has been the hit of town these days. Tried to make a reservation all night the day before but never managed to get through. So the decision was to go early at 11:30 am so we could leave by the time the crowd arrives by 1:00 pm.We arrived at 11:38 am and the place was virtually vacant with just one table taken. We arrived at 11:38 am and the place was virtually vacant with just one table taken. However, not totally unexpected, the hostess politely said that the place was fully reserved already. Well, everything is still going as planned, and I suggested that we would leave and release the table by 1:00 pm. "Ah, ok if you could return the table by 12:45 pm", she said. Fine with me until we were led to the table which was at hidden corner of the restaurant. A prime selling point of the place is the open area and great view. To be tucked away in a corner was not part of my plan. So we thanked the girl and decided to proceed to Plan B, which was to go to Pumpernickel downstairs. However, luck was not with us that day and the situation was similar -- place was vacant but fully booked.
So we decided to move over to the 茶餐廳 in HKCEC. There we noticed that just by the side of the 茶餐廳 was this Harbour Road Cafe.
The place is spacious and quiet and offers set lunches at $58. They also offer pastries, desserts and sandwiches. Self-service, no service charge. Not a bad deal. So we decided to try it out.
We ordered set lunches:Salad + lasagna + dessert
Soup + chicken burgundy + coffee
The minnestrone soup was a bit dull, probably not enough tomato.Didn't try the salad but didn't look appealing and not green/fresh.
The main courses were made on order at a small counter by the cashier.
The lasagna was great with rich tomato flavour and a thick meat sauce. A bit more mozzarella would be better though.
The chicken burgundy was a disappointment -- the chicken and sauce was tasteless, not a trace of redwine's presence. The only good thing of the dish was the baked baby potatos.
The coffee was a Lavazza and was ok to me. The brownie was rich, chocolaty and moist , but a bit too small.
At $58 and with the comfortable setting, the place offers a nice spot for HKCEC visitors and spill-overs from Assaggio. Will encore.PS: Just a suggestion to the management. For some reasons, the dessert, soup and salad were all served in disposible containers/cups. Not environmentally friendly especially since HKCEC is a place frequented by many overseas visitors.
