After the Wanchai restaurant closed because of the increasing rent, I was elated to find out that Verde Mar was finally reopening in Sai Ying Pun! Arrived on a Sunday night and was greeted warmly by the server and the lovely owner. We ordered and the drinks were quickly served - two cold Mexican Chocolates. We ordered and the drinks were quickly served - two cold Mexican Chocolates. They’re delectably sweet, with a nice tang of cinnamon in the mix.
Then came our Super Nachos! We chose to order it with their homemade pork chorizo. The nachos were crisp and warm, so you could tell the dish was freshly made.
Our burrito bowl was next, “Burrito Bowl Supreme”, as it was titled on the menu. We upgraded to hanger steak and of course, it absolutely delivered. A classic Mexican dish that has cemented itself as a staple order every time I visit Verde Mar.
We decided to try something new with the Steak Arrachera carne asada, supplemented with (as recommended by the menu) 3 nicely toasted tortillas. We asked for medium, and the owner served us the dish and asked us to give it a cut to make sure it was cooked to our liking. The steak was visibly low in fat content but surprisingly juicy and tender. The tortillas disappeared as fast as they came, wrapping up the slices of steak along with the various garnishes we were presented with on the dish.
Last but not least, dessert! The Mexican Rice Pudding was scrumptious, not too sweet, dusted with some cinnamon and topped with a few raisins.
The restaurant is quite a hike from the MTR but I’m glad we made the trek. Looking forward to coming back for some homely Mexican food again!
